I have owned a 2016 and a 2017 13" MBP and, as mentioned earlier, the fan was frequently off.

Both these were dual core MBPs. I would be interested to know whether the 2018 and 2019 quad core 13" MBPs behave similarly, or are they more like 15" MBPs which are all quad core for many years.

No, 13" quad's are amazingly cool and quiet. The 2.3 i5 I have has fans often disabled.
I came from 2012 15" quad, and the difference between the 2012 15" and 2018 15" and 13" is huge - in both extremes.
15" hexas are much more hot and louder, while 13" are much quieter and cooler.

I haven't used a 2019 octa-core, nor do i know anyone who has one, but the 2018 15" (returned) i had didn't feel right to me. 13" feels like a macbook pro should.

Hey can you make a quick update about the 15" model and the fans? I am experiencing the same "issue" as Henrikh and want to know if its present on all 15" MacBook pros? My fans run at around 2000rpm but in a very quiet room, I can faintly hear the fans running. Is this something I should be worried about? Or is it expected on all 15inch MacBooks. Thanks
I returned it. Bought a 13" + Mini instead.
15" indeed are louder than previous generations and 13" - noticeably so.

Girlfriend still uses the 2012 15" quad. What felt off was that doing the same tasks on the hexa-core, fans were more agressive than on the 2012.

I have a studio and 2018 15" could be heard, while Mini and 13" when idling (Well 13" turns off fans anyway) are pretty much silent.
