Thanks everyone. I've decided to send the 560x machine back. Can't get used to work with such a hot piece of gear on my lap. Hopefully this will change with Apples next design iteration.

I think you'll have to arrange for Jony Ive to go under a bus ;)

The Vega seems to run cool, even when pushing it it's not hotter than normal.

ARM is our only remedy for the near future. Intel and AMD are adding more and more cores. Even if they go to 7nm makes no difference there will just be more cores and higher clock speeds that produce the same heat.

All PC and MBP with similar form factor have these problems when running pro apps with external displays. Temporary solution is to keep ambient temperatures cool or a desk side fan pointed at the laptop.

My Vega 20 is not running too hot. I have been going through a large photo edit export (2,500+ photos from RAW to JPEG). It has been running full steam ahead, the fans run intermittently, but it's certainly not burning up...

I just had the chance to have a quick look at a 2017 2.9 i7 MBP with Radeon 560. There was a huge difference in terms of temps compared to my 2018 560x model, hence a lot cooler to the touch. Even behind the Touchbar it was just warm under light load.

I couldn't be happier that I got rid of it. Mac Mini is miles better, hopefully 13" won't disappoint.
