anyone else notice their space bar leds from normal viewing distance? Had this turn up on the 13” I recently returned for 15”. Just want to make sure it’s normal as I’ve never been able to see them in pre-2016 models. Thanks!

Looking at mine from the a certain angle, which I think more or less replicates the position of yours (laptop tilted maybe about 45 degrees?) I can make out 4 LED's to a varying degree. The two center ones being most prominent.

Why do you think the space bar has LEDs when the key is entirely opaque? That'd be ridiculous, quite franky. 😉 Literally burning power for no reason whatsoever. Most likely what you see is light leakage from surrounding keys' LEDs.

If you take a look at your MacBook Pro in the dark, the led underneath does create an outline for the spacebar which makes it more visible. I think without it it would in turn look like Apple were being stingy with their design.

And battery consumption of these LEDs I would assume to be very negligible.

Yep have exactly the same 'issue'. Have spoken to Apple about this and they say it is normal for the 2018 models. Thought it was just mine

This is not a manufacturing flaw. At worst, it's a minor cosmetic design flaw. It's still a major improvement over the mid 2014 model that I've been using for almost 4 years. It has that kind of effect going on for each and every key.

One could of course argue why it's even there when the space bar has nothing to light up. Well, I doubt each key has its own individual light source in the MBP. That's actually rare in anything but high end gaming keyboards where being able to control the color and intensity of the light in each key is a thing. You know... so you can impress your gamer friends with a nice rainbow colored light show (I think of them as modern day lava lamps). So what you're seeing is just light bleeding from elsewhere.

I would think this is all a joke but then I remember where I am.

I think it's more a case of people being a bit jumpy because of the ongoing keyboard issues with the butterfly switches. They just want to make sure that it's not an indication of a potential future problem. Making sure it's not a problem now is much less of a hassle than having to go an extremely inconvenient exchange 1 year down the road. Considering the price that people pay for these devices, I honestly can't blame them.

I think MR does take the cake. I'm on other sites and they're a lot more forgiving on minor differences,

MR is like a Buddhist temple during a meditation session compared to some of the gaming forums I frequent.

It certainly does seem that if you go to other tech sites. I think part of this is due to the exacting standards on design that Apple has that encourages people to over-analyze every little design detail, and for some reason the environment here on MR seems to prosper on these minor design "flaws". People have become spoiled, and forget to just enjoy their machine when it works just fine.

Disclaimer: I am talking about minor design characteristics that are normal, and not major issues like keyboard that interfere with actual usability of the laptop.

Well, I doubt you investigated the MacBook keyboard with butterfly mechanism. It is common knowledge and proclaimed by Apple, every single key has its own lamp.

The new keyboard is 34 percent thinner and uses an Apple-designed butterfly mechanism that is an amazing 40 percent thinner than a traditional keyboard scissor mechanism yet four times more stable, providing greater precision no matter where your finger strikes the key. New stainless steel dome switches located beneath each key deliver a crisp and responsive feel when typing, and every key on the new keyboard is individually backlit with its own single LED to deliver precisely calibrated, uniform brightness behind each keycap.

Apple has opted to transition from using a row of LEDs with a light guide panel, to installing individual LEDs beneath each key.

I'd love to see the day we need to have a little * link at the end of that statement.

*Due to the spacebar having no identification marks, the keycap cannot be lit.

Maybe they should just write the word 'SPACE' on it, then it can be backlit, and Apple can stop lying to it's customers and short changing us on how many LEDs something has. Bloody Tim!
