All kinds of new processors and chips are rumored to be in development in Intel and Apple.

Will Apple be able to finally ditch the fans in the next rMBP?

When will the MBP go fanless?

Highly unlikely in a MacBook Pro, alteast within the next 2-3 years. My 2016 is almost always silent except when encoding 4k video.

If they can cool the MBP as fast as it becomes hot (within a minute) while exporting 4K, why not?

Of course they won’t go fanless. Doing that would mean dropping all the performance components. What’s the point if a 15@ laptop that performs like the 12” MacBook?

Maybe in the next gen ntb; Microsoft have done it in the surface pro (full 15W U series i5 with no fan) but the touch bar models with 28W and 45W cpus (and dGPU in the 15) will likely require fans for a long time yet.

The question:
"When will the MBP go finless?"

The answer:
It won't.
That would be an incredibly stupid move on Apple's part. A "pro-level" laptop without proper cooling...

I can't see Apple removing the fans, the current and future crop of Intel processors that will go into the MBP, run too hot. They need to be actively cooled. Look how much slower the Core M CPUs are for the MacBook

If you can have very powerful chips without fans, you can have very very very powerful chips with fans - which will always have a market due to the performance. So it won't ever be entirely dropped.

If you can have very powerful chips without fans,
givne what we see with the Core M, I don't see that we can have powerful chips.

Don't forget there's other circuitry in the laptop that generates heat, such as the GPU (if they stick with the dGPU).

Still likely to have CPU generating 28 - 45 W that need to be dissipated. So I don't see the fans going anywhere. And then there is the thermal load of the GPUs to be managed.
