2018 MBP with Lightroom

I know there's been a lot of discussion about the new MBP, especially regards to throttling under sustained heavy loads (such as video exports).

But what about Lightroom & PS? Has anyone compared during those 2 applications on the 2018 vs 2017 or 2016 MBP?

If you read around I did tests with my old 2017 top of the line 15 inch, the 2.6 2018 and my personal i9 (both 2018 models with 32GB RAM)

Processing and exporting to tiff of 200 uncompressed RAW files (80mb each) was fastest on the i9.

Yes, I saw your posts. That's what got my curious in the first place. But I am curious what kind of performance increase you get in the Lr Develop module? Is there a noticeable improvement in browsing photos in Library?

I think because of the throttling, people won't see a huge increase in batch processing, I saw one youtube where the 2018 model was no faster in batch processing then the 2017. I use LR, but I'm not terribly concerned about performance, so I've disabled Turbo Boost and my temps have gone from 80c to 60c and for me that's more important. LR has always run like a dog anyways 😛

After reading all the reviews, I decided to stick it out with my 2017 13” MacBook Pro for my Lightroom photo editing. I’m going to let this throttling thing works itself out, and in four years when the keyboard repair program is up I’ll trade up then. The 2017 is plenty fast enough for photo editing.

I totally agree. The only reason I was tempted was because I could finally get a 13” quad core MBP (my previous MBP was a 2012 15” w/quad core) but financially it doesn’t make sense to trade in a perfectly fine laptop I just got less than a year ago.

Yes. LR is a dog in terms of performance.

But not seeing more improvement is surprising because the 2018 MBP is almost as fast as the 5k iMac with 7700k, which is the fastest single thread Mac available

Hey guys, a quick question.
My 2018 i9 MBP will be delivered this week and after all this issues with thermal throttling I am not sure I should keep it.
To give you some background I am a photographer and photo editing it's the 'only' intended use for now.
My usual workflow consists in working with large libraries in Lightroom (multiple folders with hundreds of photos of ~50 MB each) where I do the first basic adjustments. Then I export these photos into Photoshop where I work in batch processing, i.e. applying several filters to hundreds of images at the same time.

I've been using a 2012 (non retina) fully loaded MBP until now (two SSDs, 16 GB ram) and I'm sure I'll see an improvement. But the question is, will I also experience thermal throttling? Does it make sense to upgrade or I should rather wait a few months?

Any thoughts? Anyone who bought the new MBP 2018 for photo editing out there?

Its hard to say due to throttling. There are ways to avoid the heating problem such as using the app volta, there's a number of threads already on this It's your money, your decision, I opted to keep it, but we cannot tell you whether you should return it or not. I do believe Apple will fix the issue in firmware, but I have no idea when that will be.

I do processing using both Lightroom and PS.

Do you want the best performing MacBook Pro? Get the i9. I compared with my colleague’s 2018 2.6 i7 and I get over a minute and a half difference when processing 200 uncompressed RAW images from the Sony A3R (each image is 80mb).

Now, yes let’s consider throttling, yes it throttles but does it perform the best, yup! Besides, it seems like there is a good chance performance will get better once we get some adjustments to the firmware and voltage handling.

Yup! They load up faster but maybe it’s because if the faster SSDs?
