It seems the baseline CPU is pretty much the same as the ~£250 more upgrade (with education discount)... Is it really an "upgrade" at all?

Just wanted to double check I wasn't missing anything? The most intensive thing I'd really do is build some moderately-sized Xcode projects.

No, if you're going to spend extra money get the 2.4. You then get an increase in SSD, Wifi, and storage speeds.
 
no. totally not worth it.

either go with base model of 13-inch MBP or go with 15-inch base model instead.

as soon as u start to up the spec req for 13-inch MBP including upgrading processor, ram or thinking of getting eGPU, the price will be close to 15-inch MBP base model already.
 
agree, rather upgrade to 2.4 especially with the ongoing sales here (US) best guy has $200 off now... maybe Amazon too?
