Bought this base Macbook Pro machine in May and its been great! Back then it seemed like the whole upcoming Apple Silicon M1 chips would be just okay in year 1 and it would take some time to really dial in. Well, here we are now and the broad consensus is that performance has exceeded expectations and is only getting better. Sheesh.

Seems like the writing on the wall is I need to sell my current Intel machine while I can, before a M1.5 or M2 chip based machine is released next year. I worry my current Intel machine will be severely devalued when someone can buy an older M1 machine for much cheaper in the future.

I work primarily in Logic and from what I can see from my plugins and interface, my workflow and plugins should not be interrupted .

Anyone in the same boat / have any thoughts?

Thanks!

I sold my 16 inch MBP the day after the M1 announce and took a small loss over what I paid for it. I got the M1 MBA for less than half the original price of the MBP and I am very happy with it. I would do it again. I am a stills photographer and heavy user of Lightroom Classic and Photoshop.

Would you please share where you sold it? Thanks!

I sold it on Craigslist. The buyer was fully aware of the new M1 but was unwilling to take a risk with the new technology and was quite happy to get a six month old Intel based 16" MBP at a discount. Given the great reviews of the M1 since then, I suspect that the market value of used 16" MBPs has been coming down fairly rapidly. This deterioration is also fueled by lots of rumors of a 16" MBP incorporating an "M1X" in 2021. Good luck.

Thats super helpful! Would you let me know how much you were able to sell it for? I just want to know whats reasonable to expect on offerup / craigslist. I cant PM you given my new member status; perhaps you can PM me?

I sold my MBP 16" i9 2.4 / 32GB / 5500M and move to MBP M1 16GB. I'm very satisfied.

I decided not to sell mine as the depreciation was too much for me to stomach.

Less than a year and $700 hit was too much - almost like a new car hit!

I will sell the 16" MBP when I have used it (actually gave it to my wife) till it has problems or the AppleCare expires - which should be soon since the battery is just awful..

Or when the 16" M1 comes out - whichever comes first.

BTW the M1 pricing is so good that I financed it for 12 months interest free on the Apple Card at EDU pricing...

Went from MBP 16" 32GB 5500M-8GB to base MBA M1. Sold my 16" MBP for 2.5x the price of the MBA.

The MBA is able to keep up with the workload, even though it is less responsive under heavy load.
As a side effect I do actually prefer the smaller screen size. Will most likely jump to a 14" MBP.

Selling the MBA then, combined with the budget of the sold 16" would probably stay in budget.
Different then selling the 16" then for much less, having to pay on top for a newer model.

Surely financially reasonable. But equally reasonable to avoid the hassle of selling a running workstation for saving a few hundred $.
