Other 2019 iPhone Under Glass Touch ID

If they did put touch ID under the glass... and I don’t believe they will... but would that enable them to remove the notch? As in, would the camera, speaker and proximity/light sensor be able to fit in the tiny XS bezel?

True. But the reality is, Apple probably separated Face ID away from touch ID from the entry-level iPad to keep the price reduced, as hardware components for Face ID is more costly.

Not that this needs to be said, but I think we always have those who are small strong vocal minority that want to see touch ID returned in some form or fashion, and Apple doesn’t always conform to what are user wants. The 3.5 mm Jack (Not trying to create a separate topic on the Jack) is a great example of this, and it was excellent technology when it served its purpose, but it’s no longer part of the iPhone and it’s not returning. As much as I do support touch ID and appreciate it, I have zero reason to believe Apple will return touch ID anytime soon in the future for the iPhone or iPad.
 
In a perfect world it would be great to have both Face ID and Touch ID under the screen. Touch ID is possible, but we aren't sure how good it will be yet. I guess we'll wait and see how the S10 goes. But if the internet is anything to go by, even if it sucks, nobody will say it. People don't really care if something doesn't work on Android. And as an Apple user I've never once been on an Android site to see what people are complaining about. I just don't care enough about something I don't own.

I think it will be far more difficult for them to achieve under the screen cameras on the front. S10 will have the pinhole which upon first sight looks pretty bad. If Samsung have been able to get it under the screen, they'd have done it no doubt. Even they couldn't. So It ain't happening for a few years yet.

Imagine the finger prints over the front camera lens photo problems. There'd be 100 threads about how your selfies suck with this new under the glass lens.

Off course Apple sells old iPhones with Touch ID but they would never bring it back in future model’s just like 2018. Come on boy it’s notch age.
 
It would be nice to see TouchID as an option as FaceID isn’t as good for some purposes, but I’m sceptical. Apple doesn’t like to admit they’ve made mistakes...

I agree Apple doesn’t typically admit mistakes, aside from the battery throttling, but that’s a different topic. If they would have included touch ID as a secondary option, they would have had to had it reverted to the back of the iPhone, which I personally would not have wanted, but consumers like options.
 
Apple re-introduces Touch ID, markets it as a revolutionary idea, people in the keynote cheer and go nuts as though they have never seen fingerprint sensors in an iPhone before.

Faceid does work in portrait mode, it doesn’t work in landscape mode... With the release of the new iPad where Faceid works in any position, I’m sure the next iPhones will also work the same way..

It’s also more clumsy and inconvenient to use ApplePay with and doesn’t work at all well if you wake up in your middle of the night and want to check something on the phone (I suppose you don’t look quite the same when half asleep and eyes half closed because of the light from the screen 😉)

Technically, when laying down, your face is more relaxed and altered, which is why Face ID can be prohibitive at times. It’s likely the nature of this technology having its downside, just like Touch ID was to Damp fingers.

Also has the problem if you are on your side propped up on an elbow holding the phone out in front of you. It’s definitely no where near as competent in some situations when compared to TouchID.

Though my biggest gripe is the added clumsiness of using the phone for ApplePay.

Edited. Landscape was what I meant.

I agree that it’ll improve but it currently sucks and is basically a gimmick. TouchID is more useful in 90% of my use cases. I’m considering returning the XS Max and going back to the 8 Plus. It’s just better.

I would love if Apple will re-introduce touch ID under the glass but the only thing I can see them re-introducing on the new model is the increase of price

With LCD, there is backlight and there is no way to cut a hole in the backlight layer to install any kind of fingerprint reader.

Anyway, I hope some form of finger print reader return as that's one of the reasons I dislike current gen Apple phones. There are too many instances in my daily use there Face ID doesn't work properly, or I have to change my habits to be able to use it.

Incorrect, Huawei Mate 20 Pro has the same type of 3D mapping as Apple, with dot projector.

Ironically, you’re also incorrect, it’s _not_ the same. After further research, Huawei’s Dot projector actually utilizes up to 300,000 data points on the users face from the dot projector, where as Apple uses 30,000 data points. Either way, yes, I didn’t know Huawei offered their version of 3D Mapping. Good to know, though.

To be fair, he said the same type, not specifically exactly the same, so he was correct in what he said.

To be fair, if you research Huwaei’s 3D Facial mapping blueprint outline, it isn’t the same type... at all. As a matter of fact, it uses an array of different sensors, dot projector and mapping procedures (The IR blaster is allegedly similar), all of which execute the same result. There, now I clarified your clarification for the sake of discussion. 😉
