Hi all,
I updated Catalina yesterday and my MBP is unusable now. Looks like it’s not using higher CPU frequencies for some reason. Most of the time it’s stuck at 1.3Ghz.
I did already reset smc/pram or what it’s called but it didn’t help. Apps open very slow if at all, and it performs like a netbook from 2008.
What options do I have? As I said, smc/pram didn’t help.

Thanks all!

I am up to date but since in installed OS Catalina, my laptop has been lagging!? If your laptop is that bad do a TimeMachine or CCC backup and format/reinstall and see the results.

I love it. 2 hours later, it just works again as if it never happened. Woah do I hate Apples software quality lately.

I have to revive this thread once again. It did something similar today. It just didn't turbo boost correctly. It was stuck in lower frequencies, while the cpu temperature was at a pretty low 70º or something.

The MacBook was unresponsive, frozen at times, and it disappeared after 5 minutes or so.

It is really weird, feels like a low power state of some sort, the fans didn't even spin at full speed.

any ideas?

I am using Catalina. I don’t know which version of Catalina it is. But I really like it. Catalina is very stable and I find that it is much snappier than the previous macOS version that I was using which I think was Mojave which is what I think it came with.

Hi. Thanks for the help!

I already took it to the shop to get it repaired. There is something wrong with it, when I push both CPU and GPU it throttles a lot. The screenshot below is cpu load only on a freshly installed MacOS.

this also looks like the randomly happening freezes. And these were without stress testing the machine

for comparison: this is my old 2014 MBP 15". No wonder the new one didn't really feel 5 years faster...

That's really a sick laptop. Totally not supposed to behave that way.
Have you fixed it yet?

No, I just took it to the store yesterday. I really hope it's easy to fix and that the laptop wasn't damaged in the months I used it.
I'm normally not running artificial benchmarks, I just thought that's the state of MacOS on this machine. I'm glad I did now.

Quick update: they replaced the logic board and the extreme throttling is gone. So far so good.

But in return I got a board with coil whine and different, annoying, fan noise. Sounds like it's in resonance with the chassis. Didn't decide yet if I want to to keep it like this.

FML, it's so annoying
