Hi, I have a refurb 2020 MacBook Pro. I just got it a few says ago. It came with 4 battery cycles and according to iStat mini, Coconut Battery and Battery Health 2, it is at 98% battery health. After PRAM and SMC reset, even in the system report, its max capacity is continuously changing. I have did a limited amount of research and it seems that most other MBP's with 98% battery health have more cycles counts.

Should I return this refurb'ed 2020 is the question I am asking myself or if I am needlessly worrying.

Any thoughts?

Perhaps I am being picky, but with only 5 cycles now, I do not think it should have dropped this low on the % of capacity.

I'm having a similar issue... Mine shows 93% battery health and maximum it will charge to is 4,736 compared to 5,088 (original max). I've had it for 4 months and it's gone through 49 cycles. It's a little concerning to say the least.

Yikes....I would expect a little drop with that many cycles. If the percentage of mine continues, I will have around 80 something at the level of cycles.

Max batter capacity as reported by the OS (Coconut Battery just reads this data from system report and displays it nicely) fluctuates considerably with normal use. As far as I understand, it is really an estimate of maximum battery capacity. My 2020 13" MacBook Pro that I purchased in May has 29 battery cycles and is currently reporting 95% health (4853mAh/5088mAh). This fluctuates a bit everyday in my experience.

I think some of this is to do with the new battery health feature introduced in one of the Catalina point-releases. According to Apple, this feature aims to preserve battery longevity at the expense of maximum capacity (if I understand it correctly). This feature can be turned off to restore a more true maximum battery capacity. The toggle can be found in System Preferences>Energy Saver>Battery Health.

Here is an Apple Support article on the subject. They are pretty vague about how the health management feature actually works...
Thanks! I'll check both out...I had prepared to send it back. But before I stick that FedEx label on the box, I'll check these materials out. Thanks Patcell!

Is this an Apple refurb? Odd the coconut battery app shows the battery mfg date year as 1979. As mentioned previously, the health management setting is worth a try.

My 2020 MBP purchased in mid July has 15 cycles and is at 98.4%. I'm not terribly worried about it. It started at 100% but dropped to where its at now after 2 cycles and has stayed here since then. If anything maybe towards the end of my AC+ I will exchange it for a newer one.

you could try turning off the battery management feature and putting your battery through a few "normal" cycles and see what happens.
