I think getting a 13 or 16" Pro would just be silly right now. Unless you absolutely need it for some reason and cant hold out or your old laptop is busted and Air won't cut it.

Even Pro will look weak compared to Apple Silicone once its transition has occurred and is smooth.

Air a casual model, still the latest architecture (without having to break $1799 barrier for 10th gen) even if in a different class. Small wedge shape, good keyboard, True Tone, good speakers, good to go.

I think a large factor in such a decision is application support, including drivers/plug-ins, and so on.

I have had a Apple laptop Since my white 2009 macbook and several iPads since iPad 4. Even had a iPad Pro, currently using a mini 4. I prefer the Mac OS for work. iOS just has too many work around to get the same job done. It will get there but it’s going to take Time. So I’m happy I just bought my last MBA intel processor. By the time the bugs and software is worked out, I’ll be ready for an upgrade. Enjoying the entire time on this lovely MBA using my last intel Chips.

The 2019 model might be even better as a transitional machine since you can boot Mojave which is the final version to support 32-bit executables, older video codecs, etc.

There is a good likelihood that I will be ditching my MacBook Air 2019 shortly. Almost all of the benefits of the macOS ecosystem I use at home on my Mac mini 2018.

For road computing (which I need very little of), it turns out that a Windows 10 notebook is pretty adequate, especially a Thunderbolt 3-equipped one that can share the same eGPU with the Mac.

My guess is at some point I will buy an Apple Silicon Mac mini to replace my Intel-based one, but keep the latter until it has completely reached the point of no return.

Was kind of starting to think the same thing. Might grab a 2020 13" MacBook Air as a stopgap upgrade for my 2016 MacBook 12".

Contrary to the title of the thread and some of the posts, pretty sure an MBA that uses silicone would be a bad idea. Though it would be squishy, and sometimes that’s nice.

I think we'll have to reserve judgement until we see Apple's 'custom' silicone 😉

Probably best to wait and not be caught on the wrong side of this transition, the new models will undoubtedly be impressive, and 3rd party software support might be a bit thin on the ground after a few years even if Apple are still putting out OS updates. If you absolutely need a computer and can't wait for the new models though you still have to get the one that works for you, and the Air won't work for everyone.

Silicon btw, silicone is a different material used inside breasts not computers 😁

The 2020 MBA is the best Mac I've used thus far (2011 MBP, 2013 MBA, 2014 MBP, 2017 MBP, 2019 MBA for comparison). There's a good chance the last one as well.

These days they use saline filling in THAT silicone so comparing it to Powerade may be more astute chemically:)

hahahaha

I knew that. typo :p

I bought an i5 MBA yesterday, thinking the same way. I needed a laptop asap as my good old MBPr 2012 (best tech device I ever bought) was getting too slow and battery on its last legs.

As soon as Arm arrives (or maybe a few months later), I will sell the MBA. Hope to recover 70-80% of its value.
