Neither my wife's 2019 21.5" nor my new 27" make a boot tone. Is there a terminal command to turn it back on?

Why on earth would Apple disable this?
Why did people spend years whining about how to turn it off before Apple turned it off by default? Why were there utilities that would try to catch the shutdown/startup sequence and try to mute the audio at the right time, because there was no NVRAM toggle for the chime?

People will be people.

I am an old product manager for G3 upgrade cards from Newer Technology. I have had to reset the PRAM on so many computers that with out a boot chime I feel crippled. I zapped the PRAM on my new 2020 27 when I installed my new RAM... without a boot chime... hated it!
