Hello!

I'm looking at the currently available 2020 iMac refurbs and can't figure out whether it's worth $175 to move from the 5700 to the 5700 XT.

One of my secondary use cases will be PC gaming with Bootcamp (nothing insane, mostly RPGs, RTS, etc).

I know, in theory, the XT is faster - but can't find any direct comparisons between the iMac 5700 and 5700 XT. I realize that in the grand scheme, $175 isn't significant, but also don't want to spend the extra money unnecessarily.

I'd love to hear any thoughts or experiences from others - thanks!

I recall when the 2020 iMac was released, my impression was that the most popular GPUs were the 5500XT and the 5700XT (aside from the low-end base 5300):

5700XT for those that the GPU was very important,
5500XT for those that just wanted a decent GPU and did not want to pay more (like myself).

The 5700 was less popular: you paid more but still didn't get the best, it wasn't greatly better than the 5500XT.
There was a bigger improvement from 5700 to 5700XT, than from 5500XT to 5700.

Not sure if this helps. "Worth" is a very subjective thing.

I'm playing games with a RX6600XT connected to a 4k display. The graphic card is struggling.
You want to play game with RX5700XT (similar performance with RX6600XT) on a 5k display?

Your graphic card will definitely struggling harder than mine.

The 5700XT seems to be a great GPU for 1440p gaming for me. Sekiro, Dark Souls III and Elden Ring are the games I play in this res. Also play God Of War (2018), but it’s display settings are different. I get in the 50s for FPS, as it is rendered internally then blown up to 5K.

Have zero issues with smaller or older games like Brotato, Vampire Survivors, Risk of Rain 2, Rogue Legacy 2, the Bioshock games, etc.

I don't know if the 2020 iMac is indeed worth it because I have been using my iMac for years and I'm not sure if should replace it. If ever the 2020 iMac has more incredible features, then maybe I'll consider changing.

I seem to be one of the few people that actually bought the 5700 non-XT, and I had a good reason for it.

The 5500XT gets a Geekbench score of about 45000
The 5700 gets around 53000
The 5700XT gets around 60000

I myself came from a cheesgrater Mac Pro with RX580 graphics, and they were adequate for my workload. The 5700 was a relative spec-up from the RX580. I didn't need the 16GB VRAM so that's why I chose the 5700.

For the people saying there is a way bigger spec-bump between the 5700 and 5700XT than there is between the 5500XT and 5700, that's simply not true. In real-life you are also looking at thermals, and since the 5700XT can sometimes be quite a furnace under load for longer periods of time (e.g. gaming), some real-world tests I have seen concluded that there is not much of a difference between the 5700 and 5700XT
