I have the 13in version of the 2020 iPad Pro and the new keyboard case with trackpad. I find that the iPad keeps disconnecting from the keyboard. I know this because the on screen keyboard randomly pops up and the charger indicator also disappears (I have a USB C charger plugged into the keyboard passthrough USB C connector). This occurred several times even as I am writing this.

I noticed that it occurs much more frequently if I am using the pass through charging port on the keyboard, but it also happens from time to time even if I am not using that port.

How do I find out (1) if there is a software or hardware issue, and (2) if it is a hardware issue, is it with the IPad or the keyboard?

Same thing happens on my iPad Pro 10.5 and Logitech Combo Touch.
I hope it’s just a software issue which can be fixed by firmware updates.

The magnets are only a certain strength. I have a folio keyboard and it also disconnects if you tough the iPad too hard, which actually not all that hard. Not sure if there is much you can do. I just jiggle it a tad and it reconnects.

Sounds like a hardware fault. Most likely keyboard (more room for misplacement)

My MK for my 2020 stops working sometimes. I have to turn my iPad off/on again to get it working. This should NOT be happening with a very expensive product.

Yep, many users on a separate thread (including myself) are experiencing similar disconnect issues.

I am hopeful that as this is happening even with first-party accessories that this is software-related and can be fixed in subsequent iOS/firmware updates.

This is a sad state of affairs. Yes, I own one and have the issue. Doesn’t Apple test their products? New MK accessory  Note my old keyboard folio had no disconnect issues.

is this happening on 2018 and 2020 iPads?

If there are more and more iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard users having the same disconnection issue as Logitech combo touch does. It’s more likely to be a iPadOS level software issue rather than a hardware one.

But the sad news is iPadOS 13.5 beta still got this problem.

I know you likely done this but a reset fixed this for me. Granted it only happened once

This happens to me regularly. I do think it’s a software issue, and from what I thought I figured out at some point today was it seemed like the keyboard gets lost when switching between apps and the apps properly recognizing if the keyboard is there. If I stay within a single app for extended periods of time it’s fine.

Also, it’s not just the MK that does this, it’s any bluetooth keyboard for me. If I switch between all my open apps one seems to pick up the keyboard again, and I can go back to other apps and it starts working again. That’s what has worked for me anyways. YMMV

  • Happens to me during app switching
  • MK, Smart Keyboard, or bluetooth - doesn’t matter
  • Mouse or trackpad is ALWAYS fine
  • Switching between apps until one seems to recognize the keyboard brings it back for all other apps.
I’m fairly confident it’s a software issue that can be fixed. May even be certain apps that just aren’t updated yet to work seamlessly. FB Messenger for example no keyboard worked after switching out of the app and back to it. Might have been patched by now as I’ve seen a couple updates for it i think but the other day it was so bad I submitted direct feedback with how frustrating it was.

I’m pretty confident this is a software issue as well. My Logitech combo touch trackpad randomly stops responding sometimes, but the keyboard part still works fine. Perhaps something was messed up when apple introduced the trackpad support? (Maybe the software is thinking it’s a bluetooth trackpad, so it shuts off automatically and needs to be reconnected?)
