This seems mad that they will announce a 5.8” model this year and it will shrink to 5.4” next year.

Given the XR will go OLED and adopt a larger size than the current 5.8” perhaps the XR will be the better phone screen wise in 2020?

XR won’t be getting OLED. That will stay as an LCD panel, otherwise it’s too close in specs to the top models.

The rumoured smaller device may replace the XR and then introduce OLED but really, it’s just a rumour with no confirmation.

2020 XR is suppose to be OLED

The person who does the rumours is usually reliable. It says the XS will go smaller and all models will go OLED

The XR will definitely go OLED. Apple is already increasing the perceived value of the R model by calling it iPhone 11.

The 5.8" model occupies a space that is weird. It's the least popular model because most consumers want larger phones. The 5.8" is neither large nor small. The 5.4" model uses the same small form factor as iPhone 6.

Xiaomi sells a smartphone today with 6.1" OLED for under $200. By 2020, OLED will be a standard feature on virtually every phone.

There are plenty of features Apple can add/delete on the the R, including:
  • ToF sensor
  • Display PPI
  • Pencil support
  • RAM

Right, but in hindsight, all 2020 iPhones are expected to utilize OLED, which LG is a secondary supplier to this. Apple is clearly moving away from LCD/[liquid retina display’s] for the iPhone lineup. The iPad being the next likely change up (OLED, not Micro-LED).

To me, half of this rumour makes perfect sense. The change would mean a much more defined small, medium, large structure.

Where it doesn’t make so much sense to me is if they perpetuate the status quo of the higher-end models being the small and large options. It’s forcing the “Pro” (ugh, that’s going to take some getting used to) buyers to the extreme ends of the scale - smaller than they’re currently used to or larger than they’re used to.

I know a lot of people who have upgraded to the XR and almost all of them comment that it’s too big for their liking. To me, it feels like the 5.4” model should be the ‘mainstream’ base model.

But that’s only my own opinion and coloured by my own preference for the higher end features in the XR form factor.

Apologies I misread the initial post when I replied, I thought OP was saying the XR replacement this time would get OLED.

My take...

What is now the XR will become the smaller device if they go down that route, with the “lesser” camera.

The Pro models will then be the two larger devices with better screens and cameras, especially if they all have OLED as otherwise the Pro model with the same screen and slightly better camera wouldn’t be enough difference from what is the XR now is in the range.

So the regular iPhone is the smaller device then the Pro then the larger Pro.

But who knows, I genuinely hope they do make a smaller device again. I have an SE now and just sold my XR as it was too big, something in between those two without a massive price would be very popular, but it’s Apple - so who knows

Sorry but you are wrong the XS is the phone that’s going smaller the XR will have a larger OLED screen

Ming-Chi Kuo today released a report discussing the 2020 iPhone lineup. As expected, Kuo says that Apple is set to launch the first 5G iPhones later next year. The analyst also says that all three models will feature OLED displays. The report says the new phones will come in 6.7-inch, 5.4-inch, and 6.1-inch screen sizes.

The 6.1-inch OLED model is apparently the successor to the iPhone XR (or whatever this year’s 2019 LCD 6.1-inch iPhone is called) and will support LTE only. The new 6.7-inch and 5.4-inch phones would support 5G mobile data.”

This guy usually gets it right. So my point is why buy an XS in 2019 update if that model will go smaller? I don’t want a Max so I may have to go with the XR range for the next two years.
[doublepost=1567280885][/doublepost]I am sure more recent reports says all three will go 5G though!

I really wish they’d just go:
- iPhone Mini 5.4’
- iPhone 6.1’
- iPhone Max 6.7’

Feature parity across all three with the exception of battery life. Choose small medium or large and be done. They could use the current pricing structure still. Make the mini the XR price. Then the larger two the current XS and Xs max prices.

It'll be the internals/specs that sets iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro apart.

I honestly think the 5.4 inch form factor is to quiet the "SE" crowd. They seem to want a smaller form factor as their "main" feature. This model will take care of that nicely, and continue to perpetuate the iPhone 12 as the best value. The iPhone 12 Pro Max customers will more than make up any losses in profits with their purchase.

See reply above. Point made.

If Apple does make that rumoured smaller iPhone I hope they don't cheap out with it and instead make it a premium product with feature parity as its bigger siblings.

Also I'm calling it now, if Apple does make a smaller iPhone watch how every Android smartphone manufacturer will start making their own...

Would make life much simpler. But there’s no way they’d sell OLED with stainless steel, top end camera, maximum RAM etc etc for £750 - especially when it’s not enormously smaller than the current XS. It would basically be admission that the current pricing is wrong.

The 5.4” iPhone will be premium. The emerging market that Apple was targeting with the SE has grown up. Today, Xiaomi offers a 6.1” OLED phone with 3 cameras and in-display fingerprint for $200.

To be fair, Android manufacturers used the low PPI 6.1” LCD formula a long time before Apple copied that.

Right, $750 for the other iPhone models over the years doesn’t even include OLED, Stainless bands, ect. Apples pricing structure is built to charge a ‘premium’ if the consumer wants the top features (Especially with the ‘best’ camera offered.) For a $750 price point, it’s either last years discounted model or a model that was never intended to include OLED, best camera, ect. Also, $750 is Kinda Apples ‘old’ previous pricing (Aside from the XR), as they have clearly inflated that with the X/XS.
