Planing to get the i5 processer MacBook air 2020 to replace my early 2014 model,

the only concern is should i upgrade to 16G RAM?
want to connect my device to LG ULTRAFINE 4K, but heard the monitor will eat up a lot of RAM space.
i am mainly use it for Office and Web browsing

You don't need more RAM to drive your display.

With that said, getting 16GB is probably a good idea if you plan to use this machine for 6 years like you did with your last one. As years go by, newer versions of macOS and Office are going to require more RAM to operate at peak efficiency.

Thanks!
the major hold back will be this generation doesn't support WIFI 6, probably will just go for the I5/256G.

I would (and did) upgrade to 16 GB because it is not an expensive upgrade and RAM will be one of the things that restricts what you can run on the machine.

Apple is ALWAYS stingy with RAM. My practice has always been to order (or previously, expand myself) at least double what Apple's baseline is and its been pretty good for longevity.

Do you anxious about the wifi6?
thought if i plan to use it for 4+years, the current config of WIFI 5 might be the bottle neck.

What are you using the MacBook Air for that WiFi 5 is going to be a bottleneck? Unless you’re transferring multi gig files all day, you’re not going to notice much difference unless you have a non ac router or you live in a very WiFi congested area. I’m taking all the WiFi 6 claims with a grain of salt at this time. Plus true life WiFi speeds never Live up to the hype.
