Primarily will use the MacBook Pro to run my start up online store business. Certainly the newest 10th generation with 16GB RAM and 512 or even 1TB is the best fit. But due to the limited budget constraint, is the 8th generation i5 with 8 gab ram sufficed for my usage? I used to own a 2015 MacBook Pro retina i5 with 16GB RAM, 512 GB HDD, it works fine but need to let go because of the screen coating issue.

my basic usage will be email, excel preparation, PowerPoint presentation, web page maintenance, occasionally little photo and video editing

To me, the 8th gen i5 version is a budget buy (regret that Apple double their ram price from 8 to 16, so I would stay keeping the original 8GB ram).

many reviews suggested not considering the 8th gen 2020 version and should either buy the 10th gen i5 or MacBook Air 2020. Does the 8th and 10th gen really have that significant difference base on my needs?

I have browse so many reviews and comments but cannot make up my mine yet. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

The base gen8 would be more than adequate for your use case. If you're in the US, Best Buy has it on sale right now for $1199 (it was $1099 for a while, but that sale seems to be over now).

Thanks for your advise, 1199 is a good bargain but I am not living in US and fail to travel due to the COVID 19.

This video does a nice job comparing the 8th and 10th Gen.

Basically, if you can afford it, the 10th Gen certainly has its advantages.
Thanks so much for the video sharing, base on the hardware specification, the 10th gen totally outperform the 8th, but because of my limited budget, it worth’s to consider if the 8th sufficed based on my usage

For the tasks you listed I do not see any reason to spend $500 more. However, if you do want the 500GB drive and 16GB of memory do not add them to the base unit. Instead buy the unit the $1799 unit with the 10th gen processor.

It likely would suffice, but upgrading to 16GB RAM would be a necessity.
