Hi,

I'm sorry in advance for asking this kind of question. I don't know a lot about computers.

I'm trying to decide between a 2020 Macbook Pro (512 GB, 8th generation i5), and any of the customizable Macbook Air options (10th generation i3, i5 or i7; with either 8 or 16 GB RAM, with a 512 GB SSD). I've read a lot of conflicting reviews.

My aim is this: to get a laptop that will last as long as possible, without spending more than $1500. I'm not a gamer, and I don't believe that I use any heavy editing software. But I do use my current laptop constantly, and I often multitask, watch videos, and periodically use Lightroom and experiment with audio recording and editing.

I currently have a late 2012 Macbook Pro. I like it, but the battery is starting to fail, and I find that the performance sometimes lags, and the fan is often running.

Any advice?

Thanks!

John

you are posting this in the wrong forum. But anyway: if you wanna run it in 8 years as well upgrade to 16GB. Even if you wont need it the next couple of years with your usage.

i5 Air or Pro doesn’t make a difference. Personal choice or what you can afford

Honestly, both machines are way too heavy.

Once Apple has moved to ARM based microarcchitecture in Mac chips, there should be much less limitations in terms of tradeoff between weight / processing throughput / battery life.

Any none professional laptop that's more than 1KG is too heavy, and should be a thing of the past.

Id rather buy bottom tier more often for the same price as upper tier less frequently. I'd rather have a current low tier device than an ancient top tier (back then) device.

Once you start up selling (up buying) a Mac, the return on nvestment in satisfaction decreases logarithmically.

Right, but meanwhile in the year 2020, these are the Mac laptop options. Fun to dream about future Macs but the OP was asking about Mac laptops options today.
