So I bought the 2021 model for $104 last week… now the new one is out for $129-$149.
I’m not sure what to do. I’m not sure what real world improvements we can expect.
I’m thinking to return it and get the $149. But I’m not sold on it.

If you just use it for streaming, the ATV4K2 would probably be fine to keep.

Honestly if I were you I’d just return the 2021 while you still can. Who knows when the next model(s) will be released; it could be a while. Just make sure you have a USB-C cable to charge the remote :)

I purchased the 128GB one, but I play games and Apple Arcade on it, and the storage fills up quick.

Actually, I started seeing out of storage messages on my 64GB ATVs even before Apple Arcade even existed, now I have to delete something or a few somethings to download something new.

But, if you just do streaming, and have no interest in the non-streaming features, the ATV4K2 might be fine for you. Even the ATV4K1 is fine for streaming, and the older A10X in the ATV4K1 is even better than the ATV4K2 for gaming.

I’m in the same boat…except my deal wasn’t as good as yours. I paid $109 for the 32GB ATV Gen 2 last week. It’s still sitting on the floor in the shipping box:)

I’m going to return it and just pick up the $129 64 GB Gen 3 instead. All I do with Apple TV is watch Netflix, YouTube TV, Prime video, etc…on my 4K TV, so I’m suspecting the performance difference between the two will be negligible. But, It’s a couple of generations newer chip and will get updates longer I suppose.

The only features I’d be missing by getting the 64GB Gen 3 would be Ethernet (don’t use it for my ATV’s) and “Thread” network support (Can’t imagine I’d need that).

I do wonder if the Gen 3 with the A15 still has 3GB’s RAM like the Gen 2 4K? Or, have they bumped it up to 4GB. The A15 was used in the iPhone 13’s and it had 4GB’s RAM. They never tell us about RAM on the Apple TV…so could be!

I’d definitely return it since you’re still in an easy window to do so. It’d be different if you’d bought it 3 months ago. There’s no downside here aside from an extra $30 or so, and you’ll have the latest box.

Yeah, even though my TV doesn’t support HDR10+, long term it’s good to have the support. And the faster system.
