2022 can I run older windows x86 software on M1 through emulation?

I am looking for run ScanArt 2 which is a large format scanner software.

As well as Fujitsu Paperstream Capture for a high-speed document scanner.

Want to finally get a Mac laptop again and get rid of my windows laptop.

Test ARM version of Windows 10 against the driver you want to use and see how it goes. You can also try to use QEMU or shell of it and see how good it goes.

Possible to emulate this from a windows machine?

Haven’t got the M1 MacBook yet.
Wine (or the Mac derivative) “might” work with your device driver software but it’s a huge gamble because of its nature. Your best bet is either emulating x86 Windows using QEMU or other derivatives, or try to use ARM Windows through Parallel and see if your driver software works.

Is there is a significant performance hit with QEMU?

I run a couple of essential windows XP programs for work. I've kept a XP virtual machine around for years to keep these programs running without needing a PC sitting on my desk. I upgraded to the M1, and struggled with Parallels and QEMU to get XP running at all.

I finally managed to get the programs running with the crossover WINE emulation layer: https://www.codeweavers.com/crossover/. It's not free, but it works well and in my opinion is definitely worth the money. I'm now 100% operational on the M1 machine.
