I've just got a 10-core-GPU M2 running latest Ventura 13.0.1. I've noticed that if I leave it to go to sleep, when I wake it up by opening the lid or other action (key, mouse etc) then at first the laptop screen remains black - even though an external screen will come on OK and the keyboard is lit up and the Mac is functioning. If I close the lid and re-open it, or sometimes just press a button, the laptop screen works fine. Behaves the same with or without a 2nd screen attached.

Seems like a s/w glitch? Has anyone seen same behaviour. My wife's MBP M1 2020 always brings screen on instantly from wake. I'm speaking to Apple Support about it and just tried a Ventura re-install, but no dice so far...

reset
pram, smc
Good advice historically but no dice on a 2022 M2 MBAm by the looks of it, not a "thing" anymore. SMC gone and NVRAM apparently reset just by a power cycle with it off for a while.

If you just got it then I would talk with Apple support and see after going through their troubleshooting steps ask for a replacement.

It could be software but then if you wiped the drive and re-installed Mac OS then it should have resolved itself which it seems it hasn’t.

It could be a faulty cable that connects to the screen. If it starts wearing it could become a worse intermittent problem and at that time your only option will be to send in for a repair while now you can get it replaced and they will most likely let you keep the defective unit until the new one arrives.

Thanks. Yes new. Did not wipe drive just did reinstall on top for now. That may be next and I’ll get to Genius Bar I hope.

A reinstall without wiping the drive might not clear any software problems.

I would press power button until you enter recovery. Then completely delete and wipe your drive. Then reinstall MacOS. Back up anything but since it is new I assume you don’t have much on it anyway.

That is the only way you will know for sure if you have a software issue or hardware. Sometimes even from factory MacOS could have a corruption somewhere during the initial installation. By wiping and reinstalling then you can see if you still have the same problem. If you do then you pretty much know it is a hardware problem and need a replacement.

Good luck. I hope it is just a software glitch.

Try wiping drive and installing Monterey. See if the problem persists. Might be Ventura thing.

Update... was a hardware fault, but curious one. First I wiped the drive and reinstalled (Monterey) with help of apple support. No fix, doing same under Ventura and Monterey. Took into genius bar where they ran all their usual diagnostics and it passed, but the tech guy there could see the issue too. They tried a "software revive" which includes wipe drive and replace firmware too, so basically all software on the device. No dice.

Thankfully John Lewis, who I bought it from, were great (again) and I just gave them Apple's info and they did a straight exchange for new machine. Which is working fine now - open lid, get Lock Screen etc. First time I've had Apple hardware fault out of the box in 15 years of stuff.
