Only a few days left. Originally posted here. Anyone else participating this year? I usually just watch and read/watch the results when it's over, however this year i decided to play along. You can read about my journey so far here.

Since most of us here use our PPC's most every day it really isn't a challenge (depending on machine), but still fun to "show off" a bit to those who say PowerPC is dead.

Cheers

I've been doing it since pretty much July (with some cheating from a hand me down i5-6600K in November), but I've taken the occasion to write up my typical computing experience on my machines, focusing on the iBook G4 because it's freshest in my mind.

As with all these challenges, no. I lived it from 2001 to 2020. While I still do use the remaining PowerPC Macs I have, my primary driver is now my MacPro and MBP (and I'm not looking to go back to PowerPC as a DD).

Good luck to all who do participate though. PowerPC is still capable.

Sadly my Powermac G4 QS has been acting weird the last few months so I wasn't able to participate. I thought it was a PSU issue because it just wouldn't (or rarely) boot. After replacing the bad caps it does start up, however it often just beeps, 1 long flash and 2 short of the power light (probably bad ram). I don't know what it is because sometimes after reseating the ram just works fine and other times it just doesn't.

Hope I'll be able to fix this soon, but I'm already too later for this year ?

I enjoyed looking at your site, nice job!

Pulled the Lombard out of storage and tomorrow I'll be picking up all the tools and parts needed to CFify it, some blank CD-Rs, and the 512 module out of my iBook G3 just to see if it'll work to bring me up to the 768 limit X DP2 imposes, and then I'll update my writeup at the end to talk about how well it did because the iBook G4 is just kind of boring to talk about with how usable it still is.
I went with CF even if it's not the fastest option so I can quickly switch between a 16GB Mac OS card and a 64GB card of whatever OS between Linux and the BSDs has the best Mach64 support.

the 512 module out of my iBook G3 just to see if it'll work to bring me up to the 768
The Lombard officially tops out at 512 MB using two 256 MB low-density modules, so please report your findings. :)

(A high-density 512 MB module may be recognised as 256 MB.)

Yanno the part of this years PowerPC challenge that has been a struggle for me is finding a screen capture software for powermac G4s. I would love to make some screen cap PPC challenge vids on my Leopard g4s but can't find a software for it that doesn't plaster a huge fugly watermark over the top. I do use a legit version of Screenflow 2.0.2 on my G5s which is my preference but 1.5.4 and earlier is needed for g4s and I only have trial versions of that with the water mark. I experimented with VLC v2 for PPC32 but that was ultra buggy and would crash (although I was able to produce a picture w/o sound but wasnt really usable).

Went as far as to email the SF folks but as I expected, did not hear back. I mean v1.5.4 is super ancient and hasn't been supported for 15+ years. I did make a few vids of my G5s with ScreenFlow but really want to get the g4 vids made to show the g4/g5 difference between in operation which is significant especially with later iterations of G5 like a1117s for example vs say a dual cpu Quicksilver.

Anyone have any ideas on a screen capture apps for OSX? I really am trying to avoid having to use iphone/imovie footage. I vastly prefer the look and era correct format of something like ScreenFlow+isight - great app that dovetails perfectly into PPCC but I cant figure out a solution for 1.5.4. So frustrating. :D

Snapz Pro X 2 ?
There was also a version of Screenium for PPC, but can't found it ...

@Lastic I'll ignore the dubious value of a VPN to suggest that you could probably cheat a little and remote desktop your way into whatever machine you're using that has Visio installed. And for the VPN, you could set up a PC between your router and the rest of your connections that acts as a firewall and runs your VPN. Maybe even the same PC you use to use Visio, doing both tasks at once.

No cheating allowed, a restriction I put onto myself :)

If my Ubuntu X230 can run Visio using a KVM Win10 VM and this https://github.com/Fmstrat/winapps it should be feasible to do so on any PPC Linux machine, I would need to run a Tiny10 VM and limit it's resources but still feasable.

Likewise if I can get an unofficial GlobalProtect client working on my Ubuntu X230 using this https://github.com/yuezk/GlobalProtect-openconnect , it should be feasable on a PPC Linux machine also.

The issues I'm running against are lacking dependencies and when I'm trying to compile them from source , stuff goes bang

I ended up going with @galgot 's Snapz X2 recommendation. This worked out fine for me (after a little how-to learning curve) and gave me a reason to break out my ancient AOL tech support headset from 1999-ish to record audio on a ibookg4 that had none.

Why don't we just do it again here at MR starting Thursday? It seems like there wasn't alot of overlap between the MacYak, Tinkerdifferent, folks and MacRumors (why would there be?), so folks over here missed out. Those who already did the MacYak PPCC, great & those who wanted to can still participate. I highly doubt the MY/TD ppl would care. The more the merrier.

Odd thing happened this evening. I made a PPCC Ibook vid and exported to quicktime 7.7 and it plays fine- good audio and video. Took that .mov and upload it to Youtube and there was no mic audio. The audio from the computer screen cap came through but the mic audio was absent - very odd.Who knows why, YT is always changing and breaking things. Anyhow, I pushed it through imovie and re-saved in .m4v and it worked. First time this happened as my other .mov vids uploaded just fine. Oh well, I know how to fix it if it occurs again. Part of the challenge I suppose.

I sorta am. I just built the latest Interweb release for 7450 and put z970's Sorbet Leopard on my Mini G4 to test out. I've been less active lately in these forums and haven't been using my PPC's much lately either just due to life stuff.

I also made an account over at tinkerdifferent (I didn't even know of that site before this thread) under the same handle; hopefully I'll be able to keep up a little better now.
