Apple is seemingly planning a rework of the Apple Watch lineup for 2024, according to a range of reports from over the past year. Here's everything we know so far.

Apple is expected to continue to offer three different Apple Watch models in five casing sizes, but the various display sizes will allegedly grow by up to 12% and the casings will get taller. Based on all of the latest rumors, this is what we are expecting to change:

Apple Watch Lineup 2023–2024Apple Watch Lineup 2024–2025Price
Apple Watch SE (second generation)
40mm casing
1.57-inch display
Apple Watch SE (third generation)

Starts at $249
Apple Watch SE (second generation)
44mm casing
1.78-inch display
Apple Watch SE (third generation)
45mm casing
1.89-inch display (+6.18%)
Starts at $279
Apple Watch Series 9
41mm casing
1.69-inch display
Apple Watch Series 10
45mm casing

Starts at $399
Apple Watch Series 9
45mm casing
1.89-inch display
Apple Watch Series 10
49mm casing
2.04-inch display (+7.94%)

Apple Watch Ultra 2
49mm casing
1.99-inch display
Apple Watch Ultra 3
~52mm casing?
2.13-inch display (+7.04%)
Starts at $799

The first- and second-generation Apple Watch SE models use the design of the Apple Watch Series 4, which was introduced in 2018. With the third generation, Apple is expected to update the SE to the design introduced with the Apple Watch Series 7 in 2021 for a more modern appearance with a larger screen and slimmer bezels.

For Apple's main "Series" line of Apple Watches, the smallest casing size is expected to be discontinued. The original Apple Watch and Series 1, 2, and 3 were available in a 38mm casing, and this grew to 40mm with the Series 4. With the Series 7, it grew further still to 41mm.

This year, the larger of the two standard Apple Watch casing sizes, the 45mm model, is expected to become the smallest option. An all-new 49mm casing size, matching the current Apple Watch Ultra, is expected to be introduced as the new larger option. The 49mm Apple Watch Ultra is compatible with bands designed for the 45mm Apple Watch Series models, so it is possible that Apple Watch bands could be compatible across both Series 10 models and the Apple Watch Ultra for the first time.

The design of the Apple Watch Series 10 is expected to be largely the same as that of the Series 9 and its other predecessors, according to leaked CAD renders, meaning that the all-new 49mm model will be the most striking addition.

DSCC's Ross Young, Haitong International Securities's Jeff Pu, and Omdia's David Hsieh have claimed that the next-generation Apple Watch Ultra will feature a larger 2.13-inch display, but it is worth noting that many of these reports related to the now-canceled introduction of a microLED display. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that no design changes are expected for the Apple Watch Ultra 3, so the larger display size is far from certain and it could in reality have the same casing and display size as the current model.

If the rumors pan out, all of the 2024 Apple Watch models will be larger than the models they replace in the lineup. New features for the Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 include the S10 chip with AI enhancements, hypertension detection, and sleep apnea detection. The entire new Apple Watch lineup is expected to be announced in the fall as usual alongside the iPhone 16 models.

Well, 2 months or so to go…
Increasing the case sizes like this I think will turn a lot of people away, too big for a lot of wrists…
And “tradition” has it that case size changes occur every 3 years, so Ultra design should not change…
And what happened to the “new band connector” rumor? Dead?
We shall see…

The throw everything at the wall, muddy the waters, disinformation campaign in the apple eco-system is something Russia wishes they could achieve at such a high level.

Every year all the rumors amount to everything under the sun and then some.

Yup. Not sure why a 45mm Ultra doesn't exists.

I agree. This will be the first year I buy the "smaller" case size. The new band attachment probably hasn't been abandoned because Gurman still thinks they'll be thinner.

I refuse to believe that the series 10 will have no smaller size on offer. I rather think that somebody mixed up some numbers, or that the numbers will mean something different from series 10 on. There are too many people that want the 41mm or so version, including me.
I agree, Watch rumors have constantly been inaccurate. I don't think they would make the case size so much larger. There's a big market for the smaller version. And a 52mm Ultra would be pushing it. They can probably make the screen bigger by reducing the bezels, but the case should not grow.

I'm a first time AW buyer going into this Fall's launch of the Series 10. This will be a major turn off if there is an elimination of the 41mm size as I have small wrists and I'd prefer to not have a 'large' display. We shall see what actually is announced.

I will be upgrading from a S5 to an S10.

I have the 44mm S5, but I would only be interested in upgrading to the 45mm S10.

Hopefully going from the large S5 to the small S10 doesn't mean sacrificing my band compatibility.

I also expect to see price increases this gen. Would be surprised if the S10 starts at $399.

I have small wrists. Currently have a Series 4 40mm (Space Black) & a Series 5 40mm (Stainless Steel Silver) and have built up a fairly large collection of official straps, including the official link bracelet in both Space Black and Silver. Keen to upgrade to a newer watch, but will not be too happy if the only way to get 41mm is by purchasing an SE (aluminium and no sapphire glass...less features than Series 10....no thanks). If 45m does turn out to be the smallest option for Series 10, then I will likely buy a Series 9 in Graphite (Hermes Series 9 in Space Black would be nicer, but I could not justify the cost!)

Well, bands have been compatible for 38/40/41 and then 42/44/45 so…

I’d be more concerned about the existing sole bands/loops having to deal with a 4mm larger case, not sure that’ll work…

Man, no one in my family really wants a BIGGER watch.. the current size is a touch too large really... SMFH. God forbid Apple provide customers with options they want..

And no updates on reactivating the Pulse Oximetry? Any updates on the appeal? On a settlement? Bueller?

Not sure why their "innovation" is making the cases larger. The Ultra is already pretty massive as is. How about making it slimmer, with a darker color, or maybe have 2 versions like they do for the regular versions of the watch. Not everyone wants an Iphone sized device on their wrist.

I can see the issue with a smaller Ultra being the water resistance rating, 100m and scuba diving up to 40m presents quite some pressure, and the “internals” have a “fixed” size, and all (almost all?) traditional dive watches are quite large…

Maybe lower the ratings then.
Frankly I think the majority of current and potential owners of the Ultra, don't even dive.

yea, I do not believe this rumor of the 49/45 sizes of th regular AW.
Nor do I believe the Ultra to be updated, maybe, maybe SB DLC version ...

While I appreciate the larger screen on my U2, the overall size is good, larger screen within that size would be nice, eventually, as my eyes aren't getting younger ...

true, probably less than 5% (probably less than 1%) use it for recreational diving ...
That capability however was my main "attraction" as it made it a no brainer to get into the ocean with it, and while I'm scuba certified, haven't done it in quite some time ...

And I understand your desire for a smaller Ultra, just don't see it coming any time soon given how Apple currently positions the Ultra ...
Though I would think there is "room" in the offerings to offer more than 3 different AWs ...

And for those recreational diving, advanced cert is needed to exceed 20m... the amount of divers using it beyond that depth is probably exceedingly small as they're more likely to have their own gear with a dedicated dive computer.
