Lest we forget (for all you Bad Bunny die-hards):
Michael Jackson: In just three album cycles (Thriller, Bad, Dangerous), MJ moved 110 million albums. Every one of those 110 million units required a human being to spend roughly $10–$15 (about $35 today).
By the end of 1984, approximately 20 million copies of Thriller had been sold in the United States. At that time, there were roughly 85 million households in the U.S.
The statistic:
20 million albums / 85 million households = ~23.5%
The reality:
By late 1984, more than one out of every five American households owned a copy of the album.
Please remember these numbers:
Total human beings on Earth in 1984: Approximately 4.78 billion
Total human beings on Earth in 2026: Approximately 8.27 billion
In 1984, MJ won a record-breaking eight Grammys in one night—a record he still holds to this day. BB has won three total in the approximately ten years he’s been on a major streaming platform. And keep in mind, BB’s American, just like MJ was. 😉
1,500 streams = 1 album sale
How many streams would it take to match Michael Jackson's 500 million sales?
To equal 500 million album sales, an artist would need 750 billion streams.
For comparison, BB has approximately 101 billion streams total as of January 2026. BB is about one-forth of the way to matching the total years of MJ's career (really one-third of the way when considering MJ as a solo artist)—so good luck with getting even close to that number. Let's all look up BB in 10 years and see where he's at. 🤣
And, don't even get me started on Elvis. 🙂
Remember, folks, to put this all into perspective: Taylor Swift is number one on the planet in terms of all-time music streams.
“When we’re on the phone, and you talk real slow,
’Cause it’s late, and your mama don’t know…”
Right—because talking slow will keep your mama from hearing you. Yet, these brilliant lyrics contributed to Taylor’s 118 billion streams. 🙄 That says it all when you think about today’s “streaming world.”
In short...sit down, Mr. "Bunny".
