20th Anniversary iPhone's 'Liquid Glass' Display to Make Bezels Vanish

This seems like one of those situations where the translation/rumour mill describes a new feature that leads people down the wrong path until it becomes more clear what was actually meant. In this case, no “side screen” (à la Samsung Edge) but rather a curved screen tech that simply allows for a bezel-less look when viewed from the standard position. Will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

Shame about the cutout. I'm sure they'd planned this one with any cutout, but I get that the technical challenge is quite steep - even with unlimited resources.

Neat but why? How does this improved the user experience? What problem does it solve? Design is supposed to be “how it works” right? I mean I’m sure it will be super cool looking but, is that it? I’m also guessing screen replacement would be… tricky 😁

I'm okay with design also being about cool or beautiful, as long as it doesn't get in the way of functionality. iPhone slabs have looked the same for a long time - I'd love to see something a little different if it doesn't otherwise hurt the experience.

That said this is Apple we're talking about, but I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic about this! 🙂

If so, then at most for one generation. Then they will use the gained space to enlarge the screen again. This is the pattern they typically follow.

I absolutely loathe screens like these because putting a screen protector on is a pain in the ass. You have to follow the incredibly complicated installation process of Whitestone Dome.

Samsung just got done with curved screens a generation ago and Apple is going back. Hilarious

lmao this sounds like it's going to be a Samsung S7 Edge without the forehead and chin. how exciting. Samsung did this 10 years ago.

If this is all it is then consider me disappointed. I'll at least wait a few more years for them to fix the hardware/software issues that come with it.

I'd say "dropping on the edge" is less of an issue if the edge is round. There will be more force redistribution.

Of course, there will also be more glass on the edge than before 😀

I think this sounds neat. I'm holding on upgrading mini 12 mini for this one, if it's got at least as many cameras (unlike iPhone Air)

Yeah it was a bad phone and I returned it. It might look better without any bezels but it'll still suck and get damaged more easily.
