My 27" just arrived and it has backlight bleeding too, its normal for a LCD/LED screen. It almost goes away on low brightness and gets worse at the brightness is turned up.

Newbie with a question

I noticed this slight issue as well on forums, though I wouldn't consider it a defect. Pure whites are still white uniformly, and this is only noticed with the specific colour of the off-white/beige dialog box. If you tilt your screen or position yourself above and below it you'll see that it's related to your viewing angle. If your display is otherwise flawless I would keep it as. I sure rather keep mine than run the risk of getting a worse display.

Hi, new Apple user from Germany here.

I have the "yellow tint" too on my new 27" iMac-and I'm having a hard time deciding what to do.

Here's a picture I took today:

The picture shows the issue (if you can call it that) as I see it with my own eyes.

I'm only noticing it with off-white, light-to-medium grey and with pure-white (to a much, much lesser degree which could also be me imagining it). MacRumors Forums seems to be worst-as I type this on the "Reply to Thread" page I'm noticing it very slightly. Also, it really depends on the screen-distance and the viewing angle. And strangely it seems to be better at some point and worse at other times during prolonged use. Maybe I'm becoming OCD about this because I'm overthinking it....

Other than that, the screen is perfect-virtually no backlight-bleed, no dead/stuck pixels, no uneven backlighting. Same goes for the machine as a whole: it's virtually silent (except for a very, very slight "whoosh" sound from the fan, which I consider to be normal), no nicks and dents, etc. I really love this machine!

I'm really conflicted what I should do: Just don't worry about it or get a replacement. With a replacement comes the danger of getting a machine with other problems, of course.

I need other opinions to make up my mind. Please, feel free to speak your mind. :)

Mine is exactly the same as yours!!
I had an advanced replacement delivered a couple of days ago. And have been switching between the 2 trying to decide!
I really think I am going to keep the original. As everything else is perfect. No backlight bleed, dead pixels or marks on the aluminium!!

Whereas the replacement still had the yellowing to a certain degree but not as noticeable!
BUT. It had quite severe backlight bleed at the bottom of screen and a rather bad scuff on the aluminium just by the apple logo on front!
I just cannot be bothered exchanging again. As I really don't think there is a perfect one out there. And the next one could be worse!
2 of the apple support guys I spoke to admitted that their screens were exactly the same. And I really don't think they were bulling me either!!

Yeah, I've been thinking the same-who knows if there is a perfect one out there.

And, to make things more difficult to decide, my screen seems to improve. I don't know if this is even possible, but the yellow tint seems less noticable since I took that picture. I've been editing pics (Japan vacation) all afternoon on Lightroom, and MacRumors looks better now. Strange. Could this be a glue thing from the lamination that improves over time? Like some time back with the iPhone and iPad?

I'm hoping you are right it being the old glue issue!
But you have to think that it only noticeable on white or very light backgrounds. Everything else looks fine!
Stand back from your mac approx 4-5 feet. And see if it is noticeable!!
I can't see it from that distance. It's only when you are sat directly in front of it!
I also thought the same as you that it was dissapearing. I look at the screen and think it isn't there anymore but it is. I think I'm looking for it as its new, but hopefully after a while I will look at the big picture of what the machine will do!
Bit like getting a ding in your car door. You know it's there when you first notice it. But after a while you adjust!!

Hello
Since my English is so bad, I am taking a post in German.
My monitor seems to me just like the picture that you posted.
'm Not even sure if I should return it.

I feel like the yellow tint or lower dark part is also heavily dependent on the viewing angle. Then I bought the screen of the iMac then looked at times from a lower position and then was suddenly white yellow.

Now I've even looked at the screen with my IPad2 accurate. Because actually occurs on the same Efekt. With the big screen of the iMac it is only extreme.

I have now re-calibrated the screen time (in expert mode). Have a gamma value of 2.2 to 2.0 and shifted the color temperature of 65k 68k so on. So that is actually yellow disappeared, there remains, however, the impression that the screen is in my viewing angle up brighter than the bottom.

Would be happy if others also share their experiences. I must decide by January 2, if the back part.

P.S.
My wife says the only way that would have a color cast, I probably would. You only see white. :)

My new 27" iMac, same config as yours, looks exactly like this too. Like you mention, the yellow tint is very well visible on the MacRumors forum pages. Mine came in last wednesday, until now I have not seen any improvement (due to possible glue curing).

I will return it, cannot use this type of screen for accurate photo editing!

@Chuckstones: Yeah, it seems to go away with a bigger viewing distance. I don't know what to make of it.

@Huensli: Did not help. The lower part was still warmer (at MacRumors). But that really is the viewing angle and the distance to the screen dependent. And there are times (after a few hours of use, such as with Lightroom) where I no longer see it. Total odd-maybe your wife right and we hallucinate.

Does anybody have the feeling that it gets better over time when the iMac is being used over a span of a few hours or so?

Right now I'm leaning slightly towards a replacement. But I don't know if Apple in Germany will let me keep the one I have now until the new one arrives. That's an absolute must for me-can't be without a computer. And I'm still fearing that the next one could be a lemon with something else wrong...or no fixed yellow tint.

As I have mentioned in another thread.(could be this one actually!) Apple will send you what is called an 'Advanced Replacement'. In other words. You keep the one you have and they send you a new one before returning the original!
The replacement I got was worse in other departments than original. So that one is going back and I'm keeping original. You could go on forever!!

Hello again

For me it was the way so that the yellow tinge on the first day was much worse than on the second day. 'm Unfortunately away over Christmas. But I am curious if it might be getting better after a week.

Despite the "yellowness" all a Merry Christmas. :)

Hello,

Im from Germany and have the same issue with my 27inch.
A user from www.macuser.de said, his 21inch got better 2 Weeks later.

Hello,
I have the same problem as your yellow tinge.
By a user from the Macuser forum I learned that his 21's had a similar problem and now 2weeks later it has almost disappeared.
I am in a quandary my otherwise perfect iMac returned but should not the yellow tinge be better within the return period, then I will definitely make an exchange.
Currently, I have screen brightness to max. Display and Mac hibernation completely off and activates the screen saver. So I leave him now times min. one day go through we'll see if there is something better.

janknet @: Yes, please tell. Do you have a link for the statement? I'm interested in what he writes in detail.

Is my latest date for the exchange, I think, Wednesday the 2nd January. 've Got the iMac just 2 weeks earlier, Wednesdays delivered early afternoon. Tuesday the 1st is yes unfortunately holiday.

Did you actually find out whether in Germany "advance replacement" to make (ie, computer goes back until the replacement is there)? Or is U.S. exclusive?

Advance Replacement are available in Germany!

->Huensli
brought has nothing even about 6-7h yesterday videos encoded

You can see that on the other thread that few seem to mostly German because we were supplied with a bad display (possibly a faulty batch).
Since so much to see no mistake I will on Thursday calling for a return to a new iMac.
I hope Apple provides the same or next week, I'm still on vacation.

@ Joe
Hello, what makes for your monitor?
In my everything is actually the same.

I'm undecided what to do. Have you reported your time at Apple?

: confused:

@ janknet
Reports some games to see if you get a replacement unit. Is this only with AppleCare or so?

imo nothing short of 100% should be acceptable for ANY product or service you receive....if you want 95% then pay for 95%.....if you're happy with 95% then we'll never have 100% services or products.....send it back, I got a Mac Pro this xmas and it is 100%, if there had been a mark, dinge on box, stuck key on k/b, iffy mouse, if the boot chime was off key it would go back...! why should we accept less then 100% when in most cases we are paying 125% for the product/service.!

I'm not sure if this is normal or not. I just tested my brand new iMac 21.5

Take a look at the lower right hand corner. Do you see any problem??? Or maybe just my eyes are too sensitive.

There is also a problem of back lighting. Take a look it. That's unacceptable.
If anyone of you have 2012 iMac, I suggest you to test the display first as you have probably paid a lot of money for it.

My 27" new iMac display looks very similar but on the left side. It also has the same light bleeding from the bottom, exact same point.

But anyway, that can be seen only with full bright.

I won't replace it. All displays will look similar. I will replace it for a small nick.

Hope it helps.

I replace my current iMac for a new one.
The new mac will arrive in about 3-5 days.
The "old" iMac can be shipped back when i want - i can handle this with the Transport-Company.

I have just ordered a replacement.
The new will be back in 3-5 days.
I can pick up the current leave whenever I want - to make the appointment with the shipping company - the date can thus be assigned a bit later, so I can make a comparison of the displays.

Did you call 0800 6645 451? What information did they need? The serial number? The original order number?Did they place a hold on your credit card? This seems too be the usual MO with advance replacements.

Sorry for al the questions, but I have decided to give replacing it a try-but only under the same conditions that you got.

I wonder how that hold compares to an actual charge-my CC would go over the maximum amount if hold=charge.

What configuration, btw? I guess my i7, 16 GB RAM, 3 TB Fusion, 680MX will take a while to be replaced....

Yes i called 0800 6645 451
They need your serial number + order number
They placed no hold on my credit card

My config:
i5 3,2Ghz. FusionDrive1TB + 680MX

Ford makes excellent products and their in the USA.

Ford build quality is avg. for most of its products -- and to my point, not the pinnacle of industry quality. Consumers worldwide don't look to the US car makers like they did decades ago. I agree though they do make attractive products, but they are no less susceptible than most other cars in the price class.

no. they made some nice things at one time but stopped for a LONG time. they are beginning to come back into premium products but I'm still concerned with their resale values. I know I can get a 5 year old Taurus for under 3 grand. how much are they when new? 30k on avg. now? that's some depreciation.

OK, just got off the phone with Apple.

I didn't really expect this to take roughly an hour....

First off they guided me through a PRAM reset and a SMC reset. After that they offered me two choices: Getting it looked at/repaired (which I declined, it being a new machine) or getting a cost-free replacement.

After that the bargaining started: They stated that TNT (the transport company) needed a definite date for picking up the current machine-and they had no idea when the replacement would arrive at my place. This prompted me to get a wee bit insistent, because that put me at risk with being without a computer. Be that as it may, we finally settled on January 25 as the reference date for TNT-the guy at Apple couldn't guarantee anything, but he did guess that the machine should be arrive my place before then. This means that I could be without a computer for a few days at most (delivery date: January at the Apple Online Store)-and comparing old and new machine could be problematic, too. As for comparing, he did state that the old machine would have to be sent back-no comparing and keeping the better one. All this bargaining left a bit of a sour feeling in me, because I thought it would be less problematic.

Other than that it was exactly as you described. I'm not a confrontational person-should I have been more insistent?

Now I really have to keep my fingers crossed....
