The 91st annual Academy Awards (Oscars) will be awarded on Sunday, February 24, 2019, honoring the best movies of 2018.

As usual there have been Oscar show controversies:

Kevin Hart had been slated to host, but then backed out after inappropriate old tweets came back to haunt him. So there will be no host this year.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) board decided to add a Best Popular Film category, then changed their minds after a large backlash.

AMPAS also planned to give 4 of the 24 awards during telecast commercials, then play back the winner's speeches later in the broadcast, in an attempt to keep the show under 3 hours. The plan was to pick 4 different categories each year for the delayed coverage, starting with Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling this year. After protests from industry professionals and other critics, some of whom complained as if the categories were being cut entirely, the Academy backtracked and canceled that plan as well.

Perhaps the lack of a host will help shorten the program a bit, but the show producers admit that once again it's not going to end in 3 hours.

Films with the most nominations:
10 each for The Favourite and Roma
8 each for A Star is Born and Vice
7 for Black Panther
6 for BlacKkKlanman
5 each for Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book

It's a good year for foreign language films. Of the 5 films nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category, 3 also have nominations for Best Cinematography, two for Best Director, and one for Best Picture. Logically, if Roma is among the 8 best movies of 2018 (judging by its nomination), and the only one not in English, then how could it not be the Best Foreign Language Film? But when Academy members are voting, anything can happen.

Actor Glenn Close has her 7th acting nomination (4 for Best Actress, 3 for Best Supporting Actress). Will she win at last? Bradley Cooper also has 7 nominations with no wins, although only 4 were for acting. Christian Bale is the only Best Actor/Actress nominee with a previous win.

Costume designer Sandy Powell (14-time nominee, 3-time winner) is nominated for two different films in her category. She's achieved this before, in 1998 and again in 2015. She certainly keeps busy!

Some ironies:
"The Favourite" is a favorite.
"A Quiet Place" is up for a sound award.
Best Costume Design pits Mary Poppins against Mary Queen of Scots.
Best Film Editing has a battle of colors: "BlacKkKlansman" and "Green Book."
Best Original Score has a battle of animals: "Black Panther" and "Isle of Dogs."
Two movies have opening scenes of youngsters shoplifting: "Detainment" and "Shoplifters."

I started to watch Roma, gave it an hour and decided I did not care enough to keep going. I know, I’m bad.
I don't even know what it's about and people keep talking about it. But I did enjoy Game Night a lot.

Mrs. Q and I go crazy with movie-watching every January and February, trying to see as many Oscar-nominated films as we can. This year we set our all-time record. We managed to see 48 of the 52 nominated films, which cover 116 out of the 121 nominations, watching in theaters, on Netflix, or renting from iTunes or Amazon.

The only 4 movies we couldn't find in theaters or on streaming services were Minding the Gap (nominated for Documentary), Mirai (Animated Feature Film), Never Look Away (Cinematography and Foreign Language), and Capernaum (also nominated for Foreign Language). If you saw them, lemme know if they are worth watching once they hit the streaming services.

How I decide on my votes:

I enjoyed Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Green Book more, but there's just too much buzz for Alfonso Cuarón's pet project (Roma). I expect it to win Picture, Director, and of course Foreign Language Film.

Despite Viggo Mortensen's outstanding performance in Green Book, I think the acting awards are pretty clear, and he'll lose to Rami Malek.

Animation nominations used to be made by animation professionals, and we got a lot of experimental candidates. Now that everyone votes for nominations, they are more mainstream. Pixar's Bao was not only a crowd pleaser, but everyone saw it when it played with The Incredibles 2. I thought Animal Behaviour was hilarious and Late Afternoon poignant, but Pixar is the master of this category.

Isle of Dogs was the most original animated feature, but I think Spider-Man is more likely to win.

Blank Panther's costumes were more interesting and creative, but Academy voters love old-fashioned fanciness. The Favourite edges out Mary Queen of Scots here.

RGB was too straightforward, so I'll give Documentary to Free Solo. For Documentary Short I pick Period. End of Sentence because it brings light to a subject that affects billions. It was inspiring, and so was Lifeboat. Black Sheep was shocking but it's just one person's story.

As a set, the Live Action Shorts were royally disturbing. Detainment creeped me out. The only one that didn't make me cringe was Marguerite, so let's go with that.

Makeup: Vice and Border both had amazing makeup work. I went with the better-known film.

The Favourite had the nuttiest screenplay, so I voted for it (original) and BlacKkKlansman (adapted).

Production Design and Sound Editing were my toughest calls. For P.D., I personally liked Black Panther but I'm guessing that the still mostly old-fashioned academy voters will pick The Favourite. For S.E., Bohemian Rhapsody won the BAFTA, it and A Quiet Place won Golden Reel Awards, and only A Quiet Place had a Cinema Audio Society nomination, meaning they all have a good shot. The Sound Editors Guild Awards make this category even more unpredictable: Bohemian Rhapsody won for dialog and music, A Quiet Place for sound effects, and Roma even got a nod. The question is what the full academy will say about it. I'll take my best (moon) shot and pick First Man.

Visual Effects are so advanced these days that you can take spectacular effects for granted. Well-done but standard effects like those in Christopher Robin just don't have a chance any more. Even Solo was more of the same. So let's go with the Avengers, edging out Ready Player One.

There's no Best Horror Film category, but among frightening movies I found A Night at the Garden's old found footage the scariest, followed by Free Solo (so tense!) and A Quiet Place (nail-biter).

Wrap it up with "Shallow" for song, Beale Street for score, and Vice for editing.

Not watching, but the quality of some of the red carpet pix seemed off to me, at least the ones the LA Times had up. The red carpet parade appeared to have had its special moments though.

I’ll have to watch Green Book, probably Bohemian Rhapsody, maybe Vice, but the latter will be difficult to watch.

Contest results

swiftaw has won the contest for the 3rd time in a row and 7th tie overall. He predicted 15 awards correctly.

Doctor Q came in 2nd with 14 correct predictions. He was the only contestant to correctly predict Free Solo for Best Documentary.

yaxomoxay came in 3rd with 11 correct predictions.

AustinIllini and ejb190 tied with 8 correct. yaxomoxay was the only contestant to correctly predict Black Panther for Best Original Score. ejb190 was the only contestant to correctly predict Olivia Colman for Best Actress and Green Book for Best Original Screenplay.

Peace was the only contestant to correctly predict that Bohemian Rhapsody would win Best Sound Editing. His total was 3 correct.

Nicely done everyone. Our primary failing was that none of us pegged Green Book for Best Picture (or First Man for Best Visual Effects).

Mrs. Q, who forgot to officially enter the contest for the 17th consecutive year, guessed 15 out of 24. She would have tied swiftaw for the win if she had entered. Mrs. Q outguessed swiftaw when Black Panther won for Costume Design but swiftaw repaid the favor by outguessing Mrs. Q when Skin won for Best Live Action Short Film. They either both predicted correctly or both predicted incorrectly in every other category.

I hope you all had fun watching the Oscar show. They didn't quite finish within the 3 hour time limit, but they weren't much over. Perhaps having no host is a good idea for the future.

A few statistics:

Movies winning more than one Oscar (# nominations in parens)

Bohemian Rhapsody (4 out of 4 nominations)
Black Panther (3 out of 7)
Green Book (3 out of 5)
Roma (3 out of 10)
Movies with the most losing nominations:

The Favourite (lost 9 out of 10)

Roma (lost 7 out of 10)
A Star Is Born (lost 7 out of 8)
Vice (lost 7 out of 8)

BlacKkKlansman (lost 5 out of 6)

Mary Poppins Returns (lost 4)
Black Panther (lost 4 out of 7)

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (lost 3)
Can You Ever Forgive Me? (lost 3)
First Man (lost 3 out of 4)
Cold War (lost 3)

Isle of Dogs (lost 2)
Mary Queen of Scots (lost 2)
Never Look Away (lost 2)
RBG (lost 2)
Green Book (lost 2 out of 5)
If Beale Street Could Talk (lost 2 out of 3)

Everyone says Vice is awful.

The book (Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency) which I happen to be reading, is pretty good. But then I was just reading it for information and some context of the times, not the potential dramatic value some folks decided they could conjure up out of it. Cheney has always struck me as a guy meaning to make things happen, but not as someone also meaning to stand in the spotlight and make a big social media drama of his intended process. Au contraire, actually. Some of it may have been very dramatic but we never saw most of it happening (lol and maybe sometimes neither did the prez). So, as the central character of a partial biography, it would seem problematic to transform his role into one suitable for a Hollywood production, no matter who's cast to play him.
