The 91st annual Academy Awards (Oscars) will be awarded on Sunday, February 24, 2019, honoring the best movies of 2018.
As usual there have been Oscar show controversies:
Perhaps the lack of a host will help shorten the program a bit, but the show producers admit that once again it's not going to end in 3 hours.
Films with the most nominations:
It's a good year for foreign language films. Of the 5 films nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category, 3 also have nominations for Best Cinematography, two for Best Director, and one for Best Picture. Logically, if Roma is among the 8 best movies of 2018 (judging by its nomination), and the only one not in English, then how could it not be the Best Foreign Language Film? But when Academy members are voting, anything can happen.
Actor Glenn Close has her 7th acting nomination (4 for Best Actress, 3 for Best Supporting Actress). Will she win at last? Bradley Cooper also has 7 nominations with no wins, although only 4 were for acting. Christian Bale is the only Best Actor/Actress nominee with a previous win.
Costume designer Sandy Powell (14-time nominee, 3-time winner) is nominated for two different films in her category. She's achieved this before, in 1998 and again in 2015. She certainly keeps busy!

Kevin Hart had been slated to host, but then backed out after inappropriate old tweets came back to haunt him. So there will be no host this year.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) board decided to add a Best Popular Film category, then changed their minds after a large backlash.
AMPAS also planned to give 4 of the 24 awards during telecast commercials, then play back the winner's speeches later in the broadcast, in an attempt to keep the show under 3 hours. The plan was to pick 4 different categories each year for the delayed coverage, starting with Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling this year. After protests from industry professionals and other critics, some of whom complained as if the categories were being cut entirely, the Academy backtracked and canceled that plan as well.
