If you just got it, take it back. The keyboard, top Al case, battery, and trackpad are part of the same top case assembly and usually sold as a unit. I believe Apple will replace the whole thing as part of battery replacement, but not sure if they will touch it if a non-Apple repair has been attempted.

i just got it used. Like from Craigslist. Hence all my efforts to sort it out myself.

Doesn't matter where you got it. The damage was not mentioned so what you got was not what was advertised. I would contact the seller and get your money back.

Did you already reset the PRAM and SMC? I'm not sure that'll solve your problem, but it's worth a shot! It's been a while since I ran a MacBook without a battery, but IIRC that shouldn't change whether or not it recognizes the internal trackpad in System Prefs.

Hahaha Jerry I wish I lived where you did, with honest people. The seller clearly knew about the issue and chose not to disclose it. They blocked me swiftly after I asked them about it later that day.
