on the website,
i dont see the option on the 15"mbpro retina 2.3ghz to get "ssd storage"?
it says that it only has a set storage of 256gbflash

The OP was justifying whether the 1Ghz boost for the highest-end MBP retina was worth it. So I was referring to the top model which gives you the option to select more memory.

LOL of course it's not worth it you dolt, I can't believe you're asking this

Because as crazy as it is, most ppl just don't know what the diff. is ( esp. given they just check email, surf cnn.com and play the odd 20min burst of Diablo3 and QQ at the lack of a sustained framerate. )

/sigh

It's worth it if you do video editing or use CPU intensive applications.

For me the 6mb vs 8mb of L3 Cache is HUGE. With 6mb I can't playback my RED footage at 1/4 resolution without dropping frames. With 8Mb you can.

It's not just about Gigahertz boys...

Here's a question I've considered going with the 2.6 with 16 GB of ram. I'm a college engineering student so I might actually take advantage of the new retina autocad. Otherwise I mostly use my computer for playing MMOs ( WoW and Guildwars) watching movies , occasional photo editing and general surfing/word processing . Would it be worth it for me to take advantage of the 8gb L3 and the .1 Ghz?

The speed difference is 100 MHz, not 1 GHz you fool.

Is the $225 price difference from a 2.6ghz to a 2.7ghz macbook pro worth it??

for me i can justify the $400 difference for the 2.3ghz/256gb memory to 2.6ghz/512gb memory

but this extra 225 for 0.1 more ghz eh....

i will be using the computer A LOT i run multiple applications at a time and I always find that I run out of space (yes i can always purchase an external harddrive) but its a hassle to have to lug that thing around and plug it in everytime i need to get something.

Hell no! Stick with the 2.6 option.

apple always ticks me off with their absurd processor upgrade options.
from 2.3 to 2.4 is pretty much nothing.
They have a similar ploy on almost every computer they sell.
The ram tax is understandable, the hard drive likewise.
But CPU is not an easy thing to upgrade on Macbooks. That their options are so slight in terms of performance increase is very annoying.

If you look at Intel's wholesale prices, Apple's price for the 3820 is appropriate. It's almost the same increase.

The difference you will see is time save at full performance, the 2.7 is useful to those that rely on their Mac`s for businesses, if you can reduce your render times by 10%, you can moniterize the time saving, increase your productivity etc. 2.7 with the 8Mb L3 will really only be of significant benefit to certain applications such as video rendering, essentially you will see no benefit unless applications can utilise the additional cache.

For the average user the 2.7 and even the 2.6 will offer little if any real world increase in performance, a few fps in a game etc, even the base 2.3 is an extremely powerful machine by portable standards. The 2.7 is simply not going to kick in and "smoke" the other CPU`s, dont get me wrong the 2.7 is faster the only question is will you ever notice that difference? I know it`s very cliched, however if you need to ask, you likely dont need the performance increase.

No save your $$$

does the 2.6 or 2.7 ghz processors get more hot under load than the 2.3 or are the higher clocked just as efficent?
