Add A 24" Dell For Only $700 And Change

If they did offer a 23" iMac, that would be their first "HD Ready" iMac. I was just about to buy a 20" ACD for my 20" iMac, because I needed more screen real estate, now I need to wait 2 weeks to see how i'm going to handle that, too. Bloody Hell :)
Your iMac will support a 24" Dell for only a hair over $700 when they have the 20% off sale every month. Native 1920 x 1200 perfect for HDTV with EyeTV's new hybrid tuner for only $150.

This is good. A 17, 20, and 23 inch would be a great lineup of imac's. I don't plan to buy another computer until next year after leopard come out but i would def. consider a 23in imac, because i would like to use it like a tv in my bedroom.

If it was up to me i would love to see apple release a 13.3 in MBP and a 23in iMac(preferably with conroe). They would get my money as soon as i had it for both items.

If a 23 inch iMac does come out, it will most certainly make my dad switch over to a Mac...in other words, he'll get his own Mac and stop using my G4.
When are you upgrading? :p

Mac Cube - $699
Mid-end Conroe
1GB RAM
120GB HD
Superdrive
Intel Graphics

All BTO... up to mid-end Conroe, 4GB of RAM, real video card, and even a 500GB HD!
I'll take that, with a 2,4GHz Conroe, ATI X1900, 2GB of RAM, 500GB HD and a 23" Cinema Display with iSight.

Then again, I'd much rather have those specs inside an iMac. But that probably won't happen... :(

If apple really want to be cool, they would add a DVI input, to allow connecting that beautiful 23" display to other machines, like a Macbook. THIS will be the deal maker for alot of people.

Lol, who knows.

Once I get enough money, I'm buying a new camcorder, then if I have more money left over, I'll dump this machine and get a faster mac.

Sure G4 is ancient, it's still fast for me even when I edit in FCP.

If the merom part is true, this is very bad news.

Using merom adds hundreds to the cost of the iMac, while the only benefits are case size and power consumption (neither of which should be a priority in a desktop machine). I hope this rumor turns out to be not true, it would be a shame. Conroe is intel's best bang for the buck in a single CPU system. I'd much rather see them make the iMac a tiny bit bigger so the cooling system doesn't require a notebook CPU.

Conroe is a much better choice for this machine, if for no other reason than price. iMacs are really going to suffer in the price/performance comparisons with PC's - conroe machines will be cheaper and have a slight performance edge as well due to faster bus.

The only good thing I see here is that passing up conroe in iMac may be yet another sign pointing to a pizzabox/midtower/mediacenter mac.

mini (Yonah) < iMac (Merom)< Mac (Conroe) < Mac Pro (2xWoodcrest)

I like it. Only problem is that the Mac would (or at least SHOULD) cost less than the iMac, but likely have better specs, more power.

The difference now is that there is no crippled Mac Pro. The low end PowerMac was always crippled in some way to the mid and high end. There would always be an old motherboard, slower bus, less RAM...

This time the machines are consistent all the way across. Why? Because with the Woodcrest/Conroe differentiations they can actually create different categories.

Pros -> faster bus, 2 CPU (Woodcrest). Mac Pro
Prosumer -> Mid bus, 1 CPU (Conroe). Mac
Consumer -> Slower bus, quiet, one piece, slower CPU (Merom). iMac
Budget -> Slowest, minimalist comptuer, old tech (Yonah). Mac Mini

Seems pretty obvious. The hole left in the product line is the biggest yet, but the processor steps are VERY clear and not overlapping each other.

mini (Yonah) < iMac (Merom)< Mac (Conroe) < Mac Pro (2xWoodcrest)

The perclock speed difference of Merom and Conroe, aren't even noticable. Less than 2% difference. A 2.33ghz Merom would be faster than a 2.16ghz Conroe.

If they do use Merom in the iMac they must use the 4MB version. No one wants the slower 2MB version.

Oh I am tired of reading those names... merom yonah conroe woodcrest... I really hate them. I prefer to call them core duo core trio core something xeon something... at least I have a sequence. I really don't know if my computer has merom conroe or woodcresta. All I know i have some processor from intel and its speed is 2.16. I am very confused with those stupid names. Mac os x feline names are fun. Merom? merom what?? what's next? Tibor? Gomar-wood? Hysaias? GRRRRRR!
Rant's over. No more names for me. Bring the goodies!
Disclaimer: A person named that way is ok. Not microprocessors.

can you point us to any benchmarks that back you up on that?

cuz if that's the case then the real differential is only monetary and considering apple would have to use new mobo's maybe its 12 of one and a dozen of the other...

I'm guessing a headless Mac would cost about €600 less than a similarly configured 23" iMac. That means the price difference wouldn't get you a 20" Cinema Display (€799), but it's close enough. Since both current iMac models are €1299 and €1799, I'm guessing a 23" iMac would cost somewhere around €2099.

So, that would mean a headless mac would cost you some €1499. Sounds reasonable? Add a 20" Cinema Display and you're all set for a 'mere' €2298. Want a 23" display instead of a 20"? Sure, but your wallet will be an extra €350 lighter, for a grand total of €2648. Ouch!

That's way too much money. Such a new headless Mac should cost no more than €1299. That's nearly double the base Mac mini's price, and still several hundreds of dollars more expensive than the top Mac mini. I'd say it's reasonable. I'd buy one, I think. If it'll be priced like this, that is...

Yikes! i hope no one is cursed with names like that.

Mini tower please Apple!!!

Now Appleinsider I do have more faith in. Looks like Conroe is being left behind.

Conroe will likely exist in the Mac mini, the MacBook, and most certainly the educational iMac.

What really irritates me is that by over simplifying their product line Apple has gaping holes in terms of performance. I already own a 23" Cinema display, but the mini at $800 vrs the Mac Pro at $2400 leaves quite a bit of room for something in the middle. Like a mini tower with a single core 2 duo and upgradable graphics priced around $1300 - $1600; or a Mac Pro that can be configured that way. That's what I need.
