    Hi everyone

I've owned my iMac for just over a year. Last week on start-up I just got a grey screen and three beeps. I turned it off, unplugged it and left it for a few minutes. It worked and everything was good again.

Yesterday the same thing happened and this time it’s not starting.

A bit of investigation said that this was a RAM issue so I followed the instructions and re-seated both 1GB RAM modules. This still didn’t work, so I’ve made an appointment to take it to the Apple Store for them to have a look at it. I’m glad that I took out Applecare now.

I have been backing up to an external hard drive, however, I wanted to make sure that the last documents that I had been working on are backed up ok.

On my way in to work this morning I wondered if it’s possible to run the iMac on just one of the RAM modules? Should it work in either slot or one in particular? It’s an aluminium iMac so they are side by side.

Any help would be great :)

Yes I would swap out the RAM in either "slots".

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice.

I did a bit of swapping around and one of the RAM modules seems to be the cause of the beeping. I got the computer started using the one working 1GB module and was able to update everything.

Apple store visit tonight for replacement RAM :)

I'm flipping out right now. The 3 beeps for me are continuous. Look at me sig for my specs. I'm going to upload a video on YouTube so I can get some opinions.

This happened to me not too long ago - 3 beeps at start up with ? on gray screen.... turns out it was a bad motherboard, which can be replaced, but it isn't inexpensive. I hope it turns out that that is not the problem!
