I think I've decided on trying my luck with the exchange now. I've heard Apple can be fairly stingy with exchanges, needing "proof" and all that - do you guys have any advice on what number I should call, and how I should approach the issue?
Well, I noticed a yellowing across the screen too, which convinced me to go ahead and return it. Unfortunately, my replacement, which arrived today, is even worse. There's a HUGE bleed from the top of the screen, which shines a spotlight almost to the middle of the monitor. And I'm fairly sure that the colors aren't as vibrant on this one either. Sigh... another return.

I thought LED backlighting would really mitigate this problem - and maybe it has to the degree where it's only present on defective displays and few people see it - but I guess the technology needs to mature a bit more first. Just life's way of telling me that the next big enhancement is never going to go as far as I thought it would...

Honestly, I think it has a lot to do with the quality and care of panel construction. My personal belief is that Apple skimps a bit on quality control in order to give us an H-IPS panel + beautiful design + mag safe + speakers for only $900 and keep their profit margin intact. That means that it may take a bit more effort to get a perfect one, but when you do, you're actually getting a great deal. Now all I have to do is find that proverbial perfect one...

Resurrecting this thread, what are others backlights on the 24" ACD like?

Having sat in the dark for really the first time I have noticed that mine is much like the original posters (will upload some pic later), rather than Lava Lamp Freak's.

Is it still a lottery with the replacements to get a defect free screen & good backlights?

Thanks

Just a little update, I have arranged with Apple to return the screen. I am not up for the exchange game atm, a shame since its such a lovely screen.

I now need to sit and really think about what screen I want to get & when.

Oh, the external plague of all LCD monitors. Here's mine - you guys think this is acceptable? Obviously for $900 I'd like to get nothing less than perfection, but since there's no dust or dead pixels on the one I've got, I'm not sure it'd be wise to swap it. Due to the blacklight bleed the black levels aren't great (dark rooms in videogames can be a bit washed out). Plus, the bleed in off-angle viewing is really horrendous (I thought perfect viewing angles were an IPS hallmark?).

So without further ado...
(These pictures were taken at full brightness.)

The camera exaggerated these corners, but downplayed the slightly washed out blacks across the whole screen.

The view from this angle is pretty much completely accurate - it's atrocious in real life.

Also a very realistic shot:

my LED Cinema arrived yesterday morning(which is refurbished), and i got a similar defect like you as you can see these photos.

using at daytime is fine, and white is pure white so i really liked it..
but at night.. backlight bleeding looks pretty horrible.

so i called applecare and just right before. and they will send another LED Cinema today!

I hope new one would be perfect.

thank you for all of you guys, especially integrat.ethis and LAVA LAMP FREAK ;)

Wow, I'm pretty shocked by some of these images. I was all psyched to get me a 24" ACD next month with my MBP, but I'm not so sure now. Don't really fancy playing the backlight lottery.

Yeah, I would get the HE discount, bringing it down to £528, but look at those photos a few posts up...How can you say that's an amazing display? My £160 Samsung monitor has better backlighting than that.

because you ONLY notice the backlighting if you are looking at 100% black screen in pitch black.. other than that the screen is stunning! check my other post as a quick roundup. replacements have been AMAZING i tried taking a picture at night and all that would show up on camera was the cursor! granted the black levels are better on the macbook pro but in sure thats because it 13" of led backlight and not 24" ( i have to turn mine down a fair bit

please dont be put off buying based on what you have read on the net, you have two weeks to return and apple birmingham in the uk couldnt have been more helpful..

Thanks, that does reassure me a bit. It's just something I'm going to have to think about a lot now because I really don't know which way to go :)

Wow, that's really cool that this thread is still going. Glad my complaining helped someone.

I've actually been on my third cinema display for about 6 months now. I was happy with it for awhile, but my usage patterns have changed, and I'm spending a lot more time looking at solid colors. So, the blue to red gradient I have from top to bottom is really starting to get to me. You think I could attempt to get a repair under warranty? (It's been less than 1 year.) Does apple do that kind of thing?
