This hasn't been mentioned yet, so I will.

When you do have applecare on a machine (iMac/Macbook etc) you do realize it covers any/all peripherals you own that are apple as well. For example, my Airport extreme died, have Applecare on my MBA--> replace airport extreme under that agreement, >12months.

I believe this to be true for keyboards, mice, cables- etc.

FWIW.

Does anybody know if I purchase a refurbished airport extreme will this be covered by the applecare that I purchased with my mba or are refurbished models excluded.

According to SquareTrade, Apple laptops have a failure rate at 17.4% within three years and 4.2% within one year (when warranty is already included). 17.4 - 4.2 = 13.2%. Already this looks like a bad deal. Would you make a bet in Vegas if there's a 87% chance you would lose all your money? Most likely not.

That seems alarmingly high - 17.4%. That is surely a fault rate rather than a complete (dead) failure.

Also, probability of living for greater than 3 years if it has already lived 1 is: P(X>3|X>1) = P(X>3)/P(X>1) = 0.826/0.958 = 0.8622 ~= 86%

So those figures give a 14% chance of it dying within the two years of Applecare after the initial warranty is gone.

$100+ is a very fair price to guarantee three years of performance on a machine with essentially no user serviceable parts.

It guarantees you 2 past the first. The first year is already guaranteed.

To make a somewhat exaggerated analogy... Would I play Russian Roulette,

Not only exagerrated but not fitting. You lose once at russian roulette you lose your life. Even if we were going follow this analogy to losing the full value of your computer (it's exceptionally rare some warranty claim can approach the cost of the machine itself)... this is just one of many machines you will own in your lifetime.

One big hidden benefit of Apple Care is that it covers your Apple peripherals too. So if you're deep in the Apple ecosystem with things like Apple Mouse, Airport, Time Capsule etc then you're now extending the warranty on those items.

For me, my Time Capsule broke out of warranty and Apple took it in for repair because of my old Macbook Applecare.

I would assume it's the rate of at least one component in the system failing. In case of my MBA, it was a $19 audio flex cable.

So based on this, I guess Ebay is fine to purchase as long as you have the original receipt that it was purchased with. I'm guessing though that is not usually included in these auctions though.

Without a doubt buy the AppleCare. I won't buy it for my iPad or iPhone but when you get over a $1000, definitely buy it. I have used it many times on my MacBook Pro.

this happened to me not long ago. i bought an iPhone 3GS from the Apple Store, then bought my Apple Care from eBay. i wanted to exchange the iPhone 3GS for an iPhone 4 when i realized how short the battery life on the 3GS was. after the iPhone exchange, i called Apple to see about transferring the Apple Care Protection Plan to the new iPhone, or getting an outright refund so i could re-purchase apple care for that new phone. when i told them i purchased it on eBay, they told me that in order to be issued a refund or to transfer the apple care, that i would need to get a proof of purchase from the original purchaser, the eBay seller. of course, the eBay seller could not provide anything.

i was really angry with Apple because no where on their website did it say that i cannot buy Apple Care from eBay, even though these sellers are selling legit and new apple care warranties. i was dumbfounded. i wasn't going to let apple play me like that...its just outright wrong to not refund or transfer a legit apple care warranty that i paid for.

so i took the chance and called Apple headquarters and was transferred to an executive that deals with Apple Care. i left him a voicemail, and he called back the next day. at first he was not going to do anything for me, but then i got pretty angry, and after 45 minutes of my bickering, he VERY reluctantly agreed to transfer the apple care to my new iPhone, but told me that he WOULD NOT do it again, and that in the future i need to buy apple care from either apple or any other authorized apple retailer. since then, i have only purchased my apple care from apple, JR, and amazon.

i would call apple and give em' hell if you bought a new and legit apple care from eBay. they can't just do this to people. if they don't like eBay apple care, than they need to post up a warning in big letters, or just make sure eBay sellers can't get apple care warranties to sell. this is apple's problem, and they need to deal with it instead of making the customer pay for it. it makes me angry because this has happened to me twice. the other time was 4 years ago, when i decided to return an apple product within the 14 days and they would not refund my eBay apple care until i got very angry and gave the no choice. its about time they address the issue since so many consumers are buying apple care from legit eBay sellers.

i don't understand it. apple care has a registration number. if the registration number is already registered, than the apple care is not good. if it hasn't been registered, than its a new apple care warranty. in effect, the apple care registration number is insurance for apple, and should be very easy to track.

-or-

Apple lets you know right on their website who is an authorized reseller. If they aren't on the list (eBay, or Ted from craigslist who is selling "zomg supr cheep AAPLcare"), don't buy.

eBayers are lucky that if something goes awry that Apple will sometimes listen. Ever bought a Nikon product? Try to call in support for a Grey Market product.

they won't even speak to you.

The thing is, it probably wasn't legit. Did you get an unopened Applecare box or did someone email you a code he happened to generate himself because he cracked the verification algorithm?

Nowhere on the Apple website does it say you cannot buy Applecare from a shady guy on the street with an overcoat full of strips of paper with applecare numbers. How can they possibly tell you every scenario not to buy from? It's unlimited. You might think that's an unfair comparison, but it's not... Ebay is chock full of scammers trying to run every angle they can. Should Apple honor unlimited amounts of counterfeit Applecare numbers?

LA Computer, $179. I bought it from them 3 years ago and haven't needed it. No ebay risks and you get the box with the CD that includes Tech Tool.

fwiw joe public can snag a copy of TT from Apple's website, as long as they have a valid Applecare Agreement (i.e. not the standard one year warranty).

Though, even after owning both TechTool Deluxe and TechTool Pro, I the entire product line to be woefully inadequate.
