If you are a student... Apple discounts are usually similar or a bit cheaper than Amazon.

On top of that, it's auto enrolled if you buy them together so you don't have to worry about a thing! Just keep your receipt!

This hasn't been mentioned yet, so I will.
When you do have applecare on a machine (iMac/Macbook etc) you do realize it covers any/all peripherals you own that are apple as well. For example, my Airport extreme died, have Applecare on my MBA--> replace airport extreme under that agreement, >12months.
I believe this to be true for keyboards, mice, cables- etc.
FWIW.
According to SquareTrade, Apple laptops have a failure rate at 17.4% within three years and 4.2% within one year (when warranty is already included). 17.4 - 4.2 = 13.2%. Already this looks like a bad deal. Would you make a bet in Vegas if there's a 87% chance you would lose all your money? Most likely not.
$100+ is a very fair price to guarantee three years of performance on a machine with essentially no user serviceable parts.
To make a somewhat exaggerated analogy... Would I play Russian Roulette,
That seems alarmingly high - 17.4%. That is surely a fault rate rather than a complete (dead) failure.
Also, probability of living for greater than 3 years if it has already lived 1 is: P(X>3|X>1) = P(X>3)/P(X>1) = 0.826/0.958 = 0.8622 ~= 86%
So those figures give a 14% chance of it dying within the two years of Applecare after the initial warranty is gone.
Just received this from Apple
Dear Apple Customer,
AppleCare Registration Number:xxxxxxxxxxxx / Product Case ID: xxxxxxxxx
Thank you for sending a receipt for your AppleCare Protection Plan. Unfortunately, we cannot accept the document you submitted as proof of purchase for your AppleCare Protection Plan. An order confirmation or shipment notification from an online auction or classified advertisement service, such as eBay or craigslist, is not an acceptable proof of purchase. We will be able to complete your registration process after we receive a valid original sales receipt documenting the purchase of your AppleCare Protection Plan from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller. You may need to contact the reseller from whom you obtained the plan to request the plan's original sales receipt issued by Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller. You may scan the proof of purchase and email it to eu_faxes@euro.apple.com, or you may fax it to 353-21-428-3917 using the attached cover sheet. Either way, be sure to include the AppleCare registration number and Case ID shown above. The sales receipt should show the following items:
The date the plan was purchased
The itemized product information

Information about the Apple Store or Apple Authorized Reseller from which the plan was purchased
Please send us the AppleCare Protection Plan original sales receipt by 3.11.2010. If we have additional questions, we will let you know. Otherwise, we'll complete the registration process and send you a confirmation email.
If we do not receive the original sales receipt by 3.11.2010, we will not be able to complete the registration process, and your product will not be covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan.
Sincerely,

i would call apple and give em' hell if you bought a new and legit apple care from eBay. they can't just do this to people. if they don't like eBay apple care, than they need to post up a warning in big letters, or just make sure eBay sellers can't get apple care warranties to sell. this is apple's problem, and they need to deal with it instead of making the customer pay for it. it makes me angry because this has happened to me twice. the other time was 4 years ago, when i decided to return an apple product within the 14 days and they would not refund my eBay apple care until i got very angry and gave the no choice. its about time they address the issue since so many consumers are buying apple care from legit eBay sellers.
i was really angry with Apple because no where on their website did it say that i cannot buy Apple Care from eBay, even though these sellers are selling legit and new apple care warranties. i was dumbfounded. i wasn't going to let apple play me like that...its just outright wrong to not refund or transfer a legit apple care warranty that i paid for.
LA Computer, $179. I bought it from them 3 years ago and haven't needed it. No ebay risks and you get the box with the CD that includes Tech Tool.
