You won't get 2560x1440 without the dual-link dvi cable. You can buy the apple version or get the monoprice version which may be a little cheaper.

Don't know what it will cost for you. The apple version is a little better and more reliable (not by much) but it does have the extra usb port so you don't lose that port to the cable.

I'm curious as to why are you writing that? This has been said already, hasn't it?

Thanks for your help, but I cannot buy it. As I mentioned earlier, I live in Brazil and I cannot just buy products in the US and have them delivered in my home without paying very heavy taxes which may double or triple the price of the product. This particular cable costs north of US$ 150 and I would like to avoid paying that much.

I have searched for Mini Display Port to Display Port cables, but I could not find any. I think these cables are simply non-existent here in São Paulo.

I tried an HDMI cable and it worked at 2560x1440 under Windows, but not under OS X. OS X only supports (artificially) a maximum 1920x1200 resolution with HDMI. But it is clear to me now that the HDMI port supports 2560x1440.

My questions then would be:

1. Is there any workaround that I could use to force the 2560x1440 resolution on OS X via HDMI? The hardware is capable of, but OS X artificially limits it since version 10.9.2, I have learned. So, it would be possible to force this resolution, I guess.

2. If I use a HDMI to Mini Display Port adapter, would I be able to run OS X on 2560x1440? As far as I am concerned, (a) my monitor supports HDMI at 2560x1440; (b) the HDMI cable supports 2560x1440; and (c) the Mini Display/Thunderbolt Port on the Mac supports 2560x1440. Is there a reason why it would not work?

Thanks for your help.

I ended up buying a dual-link DVI adapter for US$ 150. I could not find any hack to run it at 2560x1440 resolution on OS X and I also was not able to run it with a HDMI to Mini Display Port adapter (it ran on 1920x1200 instead, just like the HDMI connection).

Now, I can run at 2560x1440 resolution, but there is no sound output. How do I configure the monitor to have sound under OS X? Does anybody have a clue on this? Thanks.

You really need to use Wikipedia and learn the capabilities of various video connections: DVI does not carry Audio. Only HDMI and displayport can. I can't believe that in All of Brazil there isn't an MDP to DP cable?!?

I could not believe that either.

In fact, I used two price comparison services (Google Shopping and Buscapé, which is the most popular here in Brazil), and none of them listed any MDP to DP cable.

The cable is also not available in any of the Brazilian large retail stores, all of which sell via the Internet (FastShop, Submarino, Americanas, Walmart, Extra, Saraiva, Shoptime, Ponto Frio, Casas Bahia, Ricardo Eletro, Magazine Luiza). It is not available at Apple online store as well (there is no Apple Store in São Paulo).

Then, I went to nine stores in three different shopping malls in São Paulo (including two Premium Apple resellers) and I was not able to find one single MDP to DP cable.

Then, I went to a large Fnac store at Paulista Avenue here in São Paulo and they told me they have never had such a cable. I went to two other stores in different neighborhoods here in São Paulo and such cable could not be found as well.

Then, I went to a street in São Paulo specialized in computers, consumer electronics and spent my whole Saturday there. In that street, I went to three stores specialized in Apple products, eight stores specialized in cables and adapters, and to countless other stores that sold computers, tablets, cell phones and other electronic devices. In every store, I was told that they had never seen such cable.

Believe me, I tried. It is incredible that in a city such as São Paulo, which is the largest city in Brazil and has a population of over 20 million people in the metropolitan area, such a cable could not be found. Perhaps there is such a cable somewhere in São Paulo, but I looked for it extensively and I could not find one. I simply cannot search every store in the city.

But then, again, just look at the demand. There is almost no demand for such a cable. It is needed to plug a 2560x1440 monitor to a Mac, and people hardly have those products here. They are expensive, and the huge taxes charged by the government makes it impossible for the vast majority of the population to afford such products. The cheapest Apple laptop costs about US$ 2,100 here, and it is an 11-inch MacBook Air. Everybody uses cheap plastic PCs equipped with outdated and/or low-end processors. The monitors are all TN and, at best, are full HD. Brazilian incredibly high taxes leaves a very sad landscape for consumer electronics here in Brazil. And the lack of such cable is a byproduct of this. I will continue to search for it. I will travel to Mexico City in two months and I will probably find it there. It is just sad that this cable may be readily available in Mexico City and it is so hard to find in São Paulo.

As for the audio output, I understand that the DVI port only allows video and not audio. However, there is also an USB cable connected to the dual-link DVI port. What is that for?

To power the dual dvi converter.

Thanks. I will try to find the MDP to DP then. Isn't there any hack that allows OS X to run 2560x1440 on an external monitor through HDMI? I can do that under Windows, so it is clearly not a hardware limitation.

No idea but MDP to DP is more than Mac only. AMD GPUs have used MDP ports on many of their cards for awhile AND many Monitors are now coming with MDP ports as well. It's not just an Apple thing. MDP is part of the DP spec!

Yes, I know that. However, here in Brazil, nearly all laptops and computers in general are very limited and use low end components. In addition, nearly all monitors are 21.5-23-inch TN models with very poor quality. While Mini DisplayPort is not something exclusively found in Apple computers, it is not used in those cheap crappy devices that people use here.

Don't forget about the 27-inch Asus PB278Q! It has a 2560x1440 PNL panel, which I'm not very familiar with.

Thank you. However, as I mentioned, I already bought a monitor. In addition, this Asus monitor is not available for sale here in Brazil and I cannot order it from abroad. Thank you anyway.
