I am probably going to upgrade from my X with 256GB to the 11 Pro Max.

Given the enhanced camera capabilities of the phone, I can’t decide what storage size to get. Would 256GB be perfectly fine if you are a casual user of the camera?

While I like the idea of having all my photos and videos on the phone, I don’t need it. I just switched to optimise my photo storage to iCloud and I am now using 80GB, previously I was at around 240GB.

Wondering what everyone else is thinking or will be doing, which will hopefully help make up my mind!

I got a 256 gig and have thousands of photos and videos. Barely break above 60-70 gigs. The new compression Apple uses does have a major impact. I think 128 gigs is the sweet spot for the majority of users but of course that's not available. 256 gig will be more than enough for the majority. I would use the $.99 icloud 200 gig as the limiting factor. Since the photos and videos are in the backup, you can't backup anymore after 200 gigs without going to the $9.99 2 terabyte plan which is ridiculous. Apple's 5 gig, 200 gig and 2000 gig and nothing in between is annoying. Wish they have a 500 gig plan.

Having 512 gigs worth of pics and vids are risky since you can easily lose or damage your phone and lose everything.

512 GB is A lot to consume, but if you’re heavy into media and gaming, that alone would be a massive consideration. 256 GB is still plenty for me, I could probably never use all of it, but it least Apple still offers 512 GB given the minimal amount of users who need that high of a storage.

I didn’t know they had introduced new compression.

I think I’ll go with 256GB based on comments. Feel a little less guilty buying it then!

256GB should be plenty and give you some ‘future proofing’ unless you’re into video. If you’re shooting high resolution video, you’ll fill up even 500GB pretty fast.

I want to get the iPhone 11 pro (not the max), will be upgrading from an iPhone 7.

I have 11,801 photos and 704 videos taking up 88.42gb on my iPhone 8+ (256gb). That’s about 5-6 years of using iPhones for photos. Over the past 3 years I’ve used my iPhones for all my photography.

I’m not a pro photographer, just a regular snapper, who doesn’t care how many he takes!!!

For info I have them optimised on my IPad Pro, taking up 2.3gb!

I have a 200gb iCloud plan (£2.49pm in uk) shared with wife and kids.

I have no choice but to get the 256GB. A 128GB would be perfect for me as I still have 192GB free on my 256GB XS, but Apple knows this and juices me and countless others for another $150.

My last two phones have been 64gb versions and I haven’t filled them up yet. Currently sitting at 37,7gb and was maybe at 30gb when I bought my XS. I have the 2tb iCloud plan that is shared with my family and I’m currently using 250gb. I have 80gb of photos that’s optimized on my phone that’s currently only using 2gb of local storage.

I do miss my 128gb iPhone 7 where I could store all my photos for quicker access and not having to buffer old videos etc. But at the end of the day I don’t really need it.

I have an iPhone X with 256 storage and I’m at 64.8GB storage right now. I do keep photos in the cloud, but I download all my Apple Music library (39GB) to save on data usage while on the road, so I’d say 256 is plenty. Even if you store your photos on your phone, so long as you go through and occasionally cull extra photos or screenshots you don’t want, 256 should be more than enough.

I’d only suggest the 512 if you are storing A LOT of 4K videos on your phone.

I’m going 256GB again even with this camera I can’t justify the price of 512GB to be honest

Guess depends what the tariff prices are

Another consideration is how many movies or video podcasts you store on your phone. Maybe on your commute your cellular coverage is spotty or you don’t want to use your cellular data. You could manage all this by remembering to delete watched movies and download new ones.

If you only used 200 GB of your 512 storage. How much faster would that be if you used 200 GB from a phone with 256GB? Trying to get a sense of how much faster 512 would read/write data versus 256 GB.

My general rule of thumb is that if you have AT LEAST 33% of the space left between the difference in storage space on your current model and the next lowest, then you can get the same storage space. EX: Have a 256GB phone now and still have 80GB of space, then you are fine.[(256-64)*.333] Since 80>63.9

If you are on a 64GB phone still, you need to assess the amount of storage you have consumed since your last upgrade.

Very FEW people are good at deleting old photos or multiples of photos that didnt come out the way they liked, and going back in time for YEARS is not worth the $100 saving due to the time you would spend to free up space.

Even FEWER people manage to comfortably stay at 64GB after their very first year without having to upgrade in their second year.

Lastly, the new cameras, per file probably wont take up more than they are now since they are still 12MP cameras. The fact that it has the ability to take a photo with all 3 lenses at the same time will probably make issues when you have triple the files. If apple was smart (which they are), I'm sure they will have a way to turn this off and only store the photo with the camera lense you are actually using at time of capture. Kind of like keeping both original and HDR image ON or OFF.
