Next Up, RAM?

Bravo!

And you know Apple kind of botched it when a third party company has to step in so quickly and offer a 256GB SSD upgrade for the baby MacBook Air. (Apple was trying to be too cute with product segmentation.)

Now let's see if someone can figure out how to expand the MacBook Air to 8GB of RAM (or even 6). An 8GB RAM/256GB SSD baby MacBook Air would be a very nice machine indeed.

Why would you want to run you Mac off of a giant USB drive??

Your missing the point!!!!! This isnt a an add on!!!! Its a replaceable upgrade for that little SSD board in the Macbook Air!. Its means that users can now upgrade the storage of the MBA without paying the sky high premiums of Apple during CTO. What it shows is that the SSD isn't actually soldered to the Motherboard and that it is in fact a removable unit. Plus it offers better performance than Apples hehe! Winner!

Wow. Some of the comments here just show a total lack of comprehension. It must be early or something...
Couldn't have said it better myself :p

Though I don't really see any point in having a 256 GB HDD on a MBA since people mostly get it for its "lightness" in terms of both weigh and specs. It's not like there are many people who use their MBA as their primary computer.

However there will always be some people who'll buy this and I must say the conversion of your old SSD into a USB drive was a nice touch.

Early learning by the sound of it.

Your right there BBCWatcher! Im watching this closely. So tempted by the MBA as replacement for my 3 year old MB. Its turned out even better that Photofasts storage is up to 30% faster than Apples (Toshiba) LOL!

re-read the article. you're missing the point.

It must be depressing to know that a fair percent of your readership are cretins :/

256 GB is not bad but I have to agree that doubling that would be better. The faster speed is good too but I'm not sure it would make a significant difference on the 11" guy.

It would be very nice to better understand exactly what this new port offers up. That is what version of SATA and are there any PCI-E lanes on the connector. Considerimg the Core 2 platform it probably isn't the fastest SATA port going.

I have to admit though these new AIRs are tempting, even with the shortage of storage. If they had cellular built in they could be a better buy than an iPad for travelers. I have to wonder why Apple missed on the inclusion of cell networking, it would be perfect for AIR.

You must have read far enough to see that part about the USB attachment for your old drive ... and it was pretty clear is was just for the occasional copy-over or storage usage of your old drive.

So, since I'm sure you're a smart guy, I'll have to guess you were trying to be funny or something by saying the idea of the device was to 'run your mac off a giant usb drive'.

Reread? I'm sorry to inform you but I would say half of your visitors don't even read the articles at all. They just read the headline only, look at the pictures, and then spout off uninformed nonsense.

This would make a good tagline for MR.

a bit off topic

but what is the best ssd drive for 13" mbp late 2009? capacity 80-160gb meaning the fast and trouble free

Because that would be Apple giving something that their customers would see as useful. Weve all come to learn that Steve knows what is best for us

Steve: "You do not need 3G here"

Apple sheeple: "Yes oh masterful one, we do not need mobile networking"

Steve: "Good move along nothing to see here"

LOL!

Agreed!

Please, people, drink your coffee before reading this article and commenting. This is very big news!

Why do people just use topics to push their own product. All it is is a simple plug in SSD drive that will give MBA owners more storage space. Thats a great thing and is exciting.

It may work for some developers but it's probably not got the connectivity for developing apps beyond the Apple closed environment (an increasing trend).

Wait, what kind of connectivity is required to write code outside the Apple closed environnement ? Things like Ruby on Rails/J2EE/J2SE/Posix C/ANSI C, what the heck do those require as far as connectivity goes that Obj-C and Cocoa don't ?

So this is basically the merging point of the iPad/OSX boundary so office, domestic work and content consumption. Designed for a purpose.

So condescending. Seriously, the MBA is perfect for a lot more than that. I'll be using to VPN into work where I don't do office stuff. I'll use it code for both Apple stuff and non-Apple stuff. I'll use it to consome media, but also to make graphics using Photoshop and Illustrator.

The MBA is as powerful as my 2 year old MB for CPU/RAM. However, it has better graphics, higher resolution screen and is lighter and smaller.

It's funny how everytime the subject comes up of what is it that the MBA can't do, everyone jumps on HD movie editing. As if this was some kind of prime activity that 90% of the population does. I don't think I've ever edited an SD movie, much less an HD one.

As far as storage goes, I would never store important files on a laptop I drag around. Too many risks of losing/damaging the data. This doesn't mean that my laptop needs some kind of "cloud" connectivity, my home storage is both redundant and highly available. I would never trust my data to the cloud and to my ISP.

what type of screws are on the MBA?

Torx security type with that annoying little pin right in the middle. No major issue though! Gonna be super easy to swap out this SSD.

Yeah, I saw this on the iFixit teardown. The person who wrote the teardown article mentioned that this was a sign that Apple really didn't want the average handyman getting inside the Air.

Insofar as why someone would do this: Why not? 11.6" Air owners can now bring along a larger movie selection to watch, without having to lug an external drive. And they end up with a relatively high-capacity USB stick for free!

Why would you want to run you Mac off of a giant USB drive??

BY THE GODS!!! Do you people even READ the articles? The studies showing that people today have little attention span due to heavy Internet use may have validity....

RTF article in it's entirety.

This is a awesome news. Not only does it destroy Apple's planned obsolescence, the Sandforce controller will boost performance as well. I think the 54 positive : 1 negative ratio speaks for itself.

Now that there are 3rd party options, it wouldn't be a bad thing if these SSD cards became an industry standard.

This is good news, and vindicates my decision to go with more RAM rather than a bigger drive.

When over time 64GB isn't enough I'll be able to upgrade, and probably save a substantial lump of cash by doing so given how SSD prices continue to fall.
