Alright kids, those London folk seem to have had a lovely time at their picnic, and I figure we here in Chicago deserve a picnic as well!

So, I'm very happy to announce the:

MacRumors Chicago Picnic 2007

applestore.jpg

The exact location and date need to be worked out, though I recommend we do it in April or May, when things have started to warm up, though we could do it in the winter and call it the "MR Chicago Winter Snowday" or something like that. Though then it'd be indoors, ideally.

Either way, Chicagoans! Discuss! We should have no problem getting at least a dozen people to go, hell, there's 12 members with "Chicago" in their member name alone!

Yay! And this time no flaking out! ;) 'Dis get your butt in on this one too. :) I say we all march down to Millennium Park for a picnic some time late May.

The weather in late May is too unpredictable - even into mid June. I would suggest late June. Meet up at the Apple Store, picnic at some free Millennium Park concert - maybe some cocktails at the bar on Michigan Ave. in the park? Pricey bar but great scenery and people watching.

Or, we bring our own booze, drink it in the open, and simultaneously hold "The Great Chicago MacRumors Mass-Arrest of 2007". :)

Alcohol is "allowed" in the parks during concerts. My wife and I bring bottles of wine and beer to every free concert and movie in Millennium Park or Grant Park. Unless it's during a major festival (Taste of Chicago, Blues Fest or Jazz Fest) the cops don't care.

Open containers in the parks - it's not just for hobos anymore.

ooh, I might be up for that!

the london meetup has an inflatable banana - we'll need something better :p

D

...although we are tentatively planning for 07.07.07... ;)

I might be in Chicago summer 2008 BTW so watch out over there. :D

I'm hoping that even if the Chicago doesn't have the free wireless setup yet that we could leach on a signal or cell phone uplink so we could iChatAV with the MR gatherings in other countries. A geeky Live Aid style gathering indeed.

Summer by the lake in Chicago makes living in the midwest tolerable. This gathering needs to be sometime between mid-June & September - any earlier may be very cold. Not including all the great neighborhood special events (since we'll be meeting downtown) here are a few things to contend with, plan around or plan to attend (I feel like a cruise director...)

Official 2007 Calendar of Events
June 1-3: 23rd Annual Chicago Gospel Music Festival (in Millennium Park)
June 7-10: 24th Annual Chicago Blues Festival (in Millennium/Grant Park)
June 29-July 8: 27th Annual Taste of Chicago (in Millennium/Grant Park)
June 30-July 1: 17th Annual Chicago Country Music Festival: (in Millennium/Grant Park)
July 28: 50th Annual Venetian Night: Lakefront
August 18-19: 49th Annual Chicago Air and Water Show: Lakefront
August 25-26: 19th Annual Viva! Chicago Latin Music Festival (in Millennium/Grant Park)
August 30-September 2: 29th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival (in Millennium/Grant Park)
September 15-16: 11th Annual Celtic Fest Chicago (in Millennium/Grant Park)

Also, June 14 - August 26: Chicago SummerDance events every Thursday through Sunday featuring bands, club DJs, dance instruction, etc.

And don't forget, Lollapalooza has just signed a contract to hold their fest in Grant Park every August until 2011. This year it's August 3-5, 2007.

Oh yeah, in other parks around the city...
Pitchfork or Vice will probably host their annual Intonation Music Fest in late June.
Pitchfork will also probably host their annual Pitchfork Music Festival in late July.
There's also the Chicago Folk & Roots Festival in mid-July and the Chicago House Music Festival in late July.

Hot town, summer in the city.

I fly into Chicago every so often to visit Lee. If a date is in stone and I'm able to come I'll see if I can make it :).

But we'd be counting on you for the NY portion of MacRumors-Aid. :D

Hey, are you disrespecting the banana? How very dare you!

No no, you have a very nice banana, I'm sure. :p

I live half a block from a sex shop and could get all sort of inflatable stuff for our picnic... but just because people in London are weird, do we have to be too?

This is tempting since I'm only 5 hours from Chicago, but it just doesn't seem worth the drive :\

Plus, I've driven in Chicago once. Rather not do it again :D

That is so not the spirit! :p

Get off your sofa and go and meet up with these lovely people, you might even enjoy yourself and make some new friends. :)

BV will be very disappointed in you otherwise, she says darkly...

i'll be there. but not if its on 07/07/07 because thats a wedding of a friend, i think she's a friend at least, haven't talked to her in a bit.... but thats not here nor there....

any other day is perfectly fine. May weather isn't always the best though...
i'd say late July-early August would probably be best. that way anyone who is normally away at school would be home too.

July 6th or 8th would work as well, or any other weekends in July for that matter since the weather is usually great, humid, but great. ;)

and yes we'll have to find something to top a lubed up banana.
