This is tempting since I'm only 5 hours from Chicago, but it just doesn't seem worth the drive :\

Plus, I've driven in Chicago once. Rather not do it again :D

That is so not the spirit! :p

Get off your sofa and go and meet up with these lovely people, you might even enjoy yourself and make some new friends. :)

BV will be very disappointed in you otherwise, she says darkly...

BV is right. Get up off your ass and make the trip. I used to make this trip when I lived in St Louis and it's not too bad. 5 hours isn't too bad either. I will be making the nearly 10 hour trip, through Wisconsin no less ;)

Hey!! Wisconsin is beautiful. Wonderful people, the hills, the farms, the corn.
I lived in Wisconsin and miss it tremendously.

Just hated the cold cold winters. ;)

Well, I'm in Wisconsin currently but I'm originally from the Chicago area and I would love to come to the picnic. I vote for late may or early june - after final exams are over but before I really have to gear up for my PhD qualifying exams - yeah, it's going to be an exciting summer

Okay, I feel like the consensus is for a June or July meetup? I'm going to throw out an arbitrary date, and everyone say "Yeah, that sounds great! Let's do that!".... :p

June 24th! It's a Sunday! The average high is 80, and the average low is 61! Beautiful Chicago weather! So... now that we've all clearly agreed on a when... where!? Millennium Park? Somewhere within walking distance of my house?

Discuss!

Millennium Park sounds good, at least for a starting point.

April or May is too early

I'd much sooner have joined you on a picnic on Monday -- 50 degrees and raining! April or May in Chicago is too early for a picnic, as a few folks here have said.

Let's not wait so long for an outing to the "temple" on Michigan.

How 'bout a winter "picnic" followed by a proper picnic in July?

We should all crash the Apple Store, asking everyone about wild rumors like the Powerbook G5, demanding that we be allowed to purchase an iPhone, and causing a general ruckus! I volunteer to ride my bike through the store!

Make it a motorbike -- preferably a Harley -- and I'll be right there with you.

We'll also want to ask about a sneak preview of "Leopard," the "true video" iPod and an audience with Steve and Woz.

Millennium Park to the Apple Store is a good walk - luckily there are a few places to get drinks along the way. Maybe we could make more than one stop and get to the store in really good spirits :D

D

I agree. There are two to three Bennigan's along the way if we get hungry as well.

Sounds like alot of fun. Maybe I can join, hubby could go visit his relatives there. He wouldn't go to a picnic with a bunch of strangers. :(

First time back on the boards in many moons.

So June 24th at Millenium park? My GF is from Chicago and goes up there every now and then, so we could try to schedule a visit for that weekend.

So what will this entail? Sounds like picnic in the park and then bar hop to the Apple store?

yay! more the merrier!

obviously exact events are sketchy right now, but as the time draws closer i'm sure things will be more organized, this is more for interest and general planning at this stage, but i'm sure its safe to say that your outline is generally what we'll do. picnic, bars, apple store. in some order at least. perhaps not that exactly...

OK, as someone who will NOT be going to a picnic in Chicago, please allow me to make a suggestion.

You all should find out who is interested in attending, then ask them to tell one person (the planner) what days they CANNOT attend. That person should then figure out what day will allow the most number of attendees. It may be impossible to find one day when EVERYONE can make it, so do the best you can. Then, tell everyone what day has been selected and STICK TO IT. If people can make it that day, great. If not, oh well. But if you pick a day several months out (as it looks like you're doing), people should be able to commit to a day you choose just as if they were committing to going to a wedding.

But if you do this whole back and forth "I can't make it THIS day, but I can make it THAT day" thing in public, nothing will get done.

....just gonna pretend I'm the "organiser"...

Good idea. Ok, lemme clear my inbox, and everybody, as you read this and check your calendars, PM me when you cannot make the picnic. Let's shoot for a June/July type thing. Also, let's stick to weekends. I know lots of things will change between now and then, so keep me updated, and I'll draw up a calendar over the next few weeks and months!
