I guess it's an inevitability of increased functionality, but I do miss the early days of the iPhone when you could just pick it up and within minutes intuitively work out how to fully use it without even having to look at any instructions, rather than have to rely on articles exposing 'secret tricks' and having to wade through YouTube videos whenever I want to do something beyond day-to-day usage.
There is no need to learn every feature on the phone. I can't understand wishing it could still do so little that you could work it all out in minutes. I prefer for it to be capable of many things, and just focus on the ones that matter to me. Nobody's forcing anyone to memorize and utilize every single feature.

And still I continue to wait patiently for an option to have a slowly increasing volume on my alarm. Such a simple thing, and much appreciated by those of us who sleep lightly and want to minimize disturbance to those sleeping beside us.

Yes, I know about bedtime routine, but that's too restricting imo.
I gave up on that long ago - pre-phone in fact. I used to set TWO wind up alarm clocks - like, in the last century. One close to my head. The other across the room. Now I use my watch with its haptics and two alarms set an hour apart.

Not directly related this, but the ChatGPT example needs pointing out....Don't use AI to determine if you should eat a mushroom/fungus. There are too many variables and things that can't be determined from a photo.

Jack O'Lantern (quite toxic) and common chanterelles (very tasty) look identical in a photo and in person without closer inspection, for example. You have to see where they were picked, what trees are in the vicinity, and the shape of the gills to determine which is which.
There's a well-moderated Facebook group with actual experts who will (mostly kindly) tell you whether what your dog just ate is toxic or not. And yes, they will sometimes say that that's not enough info. https://www.facebook.com/share/g/19t3AzTyq5/

What's the point for background noise? After turning it on in quiet room my phone started playing noise. To mask what? Silence?
Every place and space isn’t silent.

I turn background noise on when I’m getting certain medical treatments. In my cancer center, for example, even though each patient is separated, there’s a lot of noise and action, and I use background noise to mask what the ANC can’t. I’m there for hours at a time, and I need to be able to be in my own world.

When I’m flying, depending on who’s in the plane or at the gate, ANC isn’t strong enough, and background noise is a lifesaver. Or sanity-saver, I guess.

There are all kinds of scenarios, and each background noise has its place for me. Some are better for voices, others for mechanical noises.

Thanks Cook. Waiting for Apple to be a humanist-futurist company again instead of stakeholder-driven market-sufficiency releases.

Very happy to see that it is easier to set custom ringtones now. Ability to save physical card is good. Overall very happy with all the changes and improvements this year.

Have you tried the alarms 'sounds' in iOS26? Some of them start gently then ramp-up so you effectively get the same result as the actual device volume increasing.

Can you use "Ask Reason for Calling" manually and decide per call individually?

I wouldn't want to use this feature like when I recognize a local number or when I am expecting a call or when I am abroad. But there are still situations where I would like to use it.

No, you can only toggle it on and off.

The thing is, it doesn’t even ring the phone, so I don’t know anyone has called until I get the notification with their explanation.

I love it so far. I get a lot of medical calls from unknown numbers, so I can’t not answer them, but I’ve also had my number for almost thirty years, and the spam is out of control. This is a happy compromise.

You still can pick it up and just use it. IMO features in this article are hidden in settings for a reason. If people want advanced options they're available.

Your post is confusing at first stated you don't like more features added, yet also want to do things beyond day to day usage.

I think interpreting "I miss the days..." as stating that I don't like more features is quite a stretch

Yeah doze pesky period “dot” full stops really really need work. My fingers always seem to hit period / dot instead of the space bar. Since 2014 🤣👍🏼

Also don’t have that location history option available in Apple Maps for me east coast USA.
