Hi Everyone,

I have been doing some research and found a few different oppinions spread around.

I am looking to get a new monitor to go with my 27" iMac 2019 (i5 9600k and Vega 48), My MacBook Air M1, but at the same time it will be used for my work laptop when I work from home or my wife works from home. So I need help deciding whether to go for 4k at 60Hz or 1440p at higher refresh rate.

The uses will be mainly work, playing some games, though not sure how many fps can the Vega 48 really output on any modern game, or even if the M1 can output more than 60fps, playing Table Top Simulator and other simple games like it or online RPG though platforms such as roll20 or foundry, and maybe hooking my Nintendo Switch to it.

Used to my iMac 5k monitor, I would like something sharp, for which I have read is better to get the 4k monitor. I know macOS prefers to work with 1440p/5k, so it will be scaling up to 5k and then down to 1440p if I get the 4k monitor. This is scaled and the system tells you that it might put some strain on the GPU. Can some tell me if the scaling affects the GPU performance a lot?

On the other hand maybe 1440p is not that bad and can get some higher refresh. Is the higher refresh rate noticeable on day to day work stuff and playing the things I mentioned above?

I think the main issue the is mixed used. just a second monitor for my iMac the 1440p would be enough as the main text could go on the iMac screen, but for the work laptops, as a main screen, maybe 1440p is too little and better sacrifice using the 4k scaled to 1440p?

The last thing I had in mind is future proofing. if New iMacs come out, might it be good to have the extra refresh over the resolution?

Please any tips on matter is Wellcome.

I have a 27in 4k 60hz display and scaled to 1440p

I don't have issues gaming on the display but then again, my eyes probably couldn't tell the difference. I prefer the resolution when needed

What Mac do you run? How is performance?
