Hi to all!

I just bought a new 27" iMac (I'll receive it next week).

1. I've been using a Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW as a 2nd monitor (so far with a 21,5" iMac). Could I still keep on using it, although I won't have the same screen resolution as the coming 27" ?

2. Would you have a good deal suggestion for a 2nd monitor purchase? My eyes are 90% of the time on the iMac screen, so I don't need the top of the line for the 2nd monitor.

Thanks a lot!

Any 1440p Dell will do just fine if you don't mind it being exactly 1/2 the resolution (1/4 the pixels) of the iMac's screen.

If you want a 5K monitor, your choices are more limited. I can't recommend the LG 5K display because of its crappy enclosure and lack of an on/off switch. I use one with my laptop and I hate it. It won't turn off unless you unplug it, but then the laptop doesn't charge.

I'm using two 5K Dells (dual DisplayPort inputs) that match my iMac monitor perfectly. But the dual inputs do lead to me having to unplug/replug one or the other of them every day due to losing input synch and/or refusing to play HDCP protected content.

I bought a Lightning-3 adapter to use an old Dell monitor with my 27". It worked fine in both landscape and portrait modes, but the iMac was so much bigger on my desk than I thought it would be that I didn't bother keeping the other monitor around. If I had a bigger desk maybe I would have kept it. So yes, you can keep using the second monitor with a Lightning-3 to [whatever] adapter to match your old monitor output.

Didn't see this thread or I would have posted here.
I've already gone through 2 usb-c to displayport cables with my Dell 2715h. Both didn't work right with my 2017 iMac.
The cable connections get warm and the picture breaks up, flickers or goes off and I also get monitor power on/off problems with one of these when connected.
I'm on my third (all different brands) and there were bad reviews from at least 1 iMac Pro user saying the same type of problems.

Edit: 3rd usb-c to displayport cable just failed too. Avoid the USB-C to displayport cable from Rankie as the actual USB-C connection doesn't release easily and caused my iMac to freeze.

Apple chat support is kinda useless on this. Even though they are friendly they just pointed me towards the support pages.

Perhaps an adapter is more reliable or a straight USB-C monitor or I guess the Moshi cable from Apple since it supports 5K it might allow higher bandwidth or something and be more reliable. I'm only using puny 2560 x 1440.
