To ALL 27" iMac owners...
If you own something similar to my iMac, and are hearing noise form your computer, here's what to do:
- Backup your hard drive
- Take your iMac to the nearest Apple Store and have them run a free diagnostic test to verify the integrity of your system
- Call Apple customer service and complain about the use of failing hard drives in their "Cadillac" iMacs.
Your hard drives are most certainly failing, and you may not find it bothersome enough to do anything about it until it is too late. I thought the noise and slow performance I was having were due to a nearly full hard drive, and the fact that I use very processors intensive applications. So I did nothing. My a few months later the problem because worse, to the point where my system was pretty much unusable. After I freed up half my HD space, I realized that this was not the problem. I then opened the disk utility, only to be shocked by a message that read something like this:
"You system has a hardware problem that cannot be repaired. Back up your hard drive, and contact Apple immediately."
Less than 90 days out of my 1-year warranty!!!
When you buy a BMW or Mercedes, do you expect to buy a new transmission during your 2nd year of use? Of course not! Especially not 15 months in.
Oh, and did I mention that I quite likely also have a graphics card issue? That's right. My screen flickers. Apple knew about that issue too by the way; and they never warned me. I would have bought Apple Care if I had known they use defective hard drives, and malfunctioning graphics cards. Instead, thinking I bought the best of the best, I ended up with a Titanic failure of a computer. Now I'm going to have to spend at least $500 to replace the drive (since they have to charge me full price for an old model that is necessary for iMacs), and probably looking at another $500-$800 to replace the graphics card or whatever else is causing my screen to flicker.
So, learn from my mistake, and have them replace anything defective before your warranty is up. I still think Apple Care is a waste of money but you may want to buy it before your 1-year warranty is up. I have lost a lot of faith in Apple this time (probably should have known something was wrong when my 17" MacBook Pro had issues... I returned it after fighting with Apple over the fact that a graphic designer cannot due with a screen that has a bunch of dead pixels! I did not replace it.); and unless they do something to right the situation, I will be hating on them for a long time to come...
