So the Apple store cannot put in a 2TB drive for you? Also, anything ordered online cannot be taken into a store for warranty work/exchange or...?

Hard drives make noise, they're mechanical. Get over it.

Many thanks for your insightful contribution to this thread - you've really dazzled us with this revelation. However, you may like to consider that most of the posters here are aware of your assertion but are experienced enough differentiate when something is acceptable and unacceptable. In the meantime, if you have any more useful contributions to make to this thread please feel free to share your encyclopedic technical knowledge for the benefit of all:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Hey, wasn't meaning to upset those hoping for a quiter 2TB Hitachi HDD, just pointing out that it isn't all silent running.

IMHO it is an acceptable level of noise from a phenomenal piece of kit.

The new imac should be here the day after tomorrow.. I'll let you know how it goes, though it doesn't seem hopeful judging by other people's replacements..

I will have 2 imacs for a week since they only come to pick up the old one on december 9th :)

I just registered to write some abuse but since then have decided it wouldn't be worth it for my first post.
Instead I say +1 to the first reaction to your valuable addition to this thread.

I agree 1000000000% with this guy they are mechanical and make noise this is barely an issue. I just cannot believe people are returning perfectly working machines on multiple occasions for this stuff. If I worked at the Apple store I would tell you to get lost. Get over it already and move on or get an SSD and void your warranty and be silent.

If you have nothing constructive to add other than just to bash others for a problem you don't have then we would rather NOT HEAR FROM YOU.

Easy there fella, no need to get yourself so worked up over an "issue" that doesn't seem to affect you.

Also, although it can be frustrating it probably is best to refrain from saying "Get Lost" to these posters as it will just reduce this thread down into some playground argument and detract from what we are discussing..

FYI I can hear my hard drive churning along just as I can/could in the 1000's of laptops that I have worked on over the past 15 years and the 10's of thousands of desktops that I have also worked on for the past 15 years. I do however have a Dell e4200 sitting here with an SSD in it that makes no noise at all.... ummm go figure. The point I am trying to make is that these newer mechanical hard drives that Apple is using does make more noise then the previous one's, taking it back to the store to get a new iMac is not going to solve your "issue". If anything I would wait a few months then take it back that way maybe Apple starts to use different drives then the Seagates they use now. But taking it back on multiple occasions is not going to fix anything at all... yes I can hear my hard drive but it's nothing that a little music can't cure. If after a few months it really starts to get on my nerves then I will take in for a replacement.

Not sure why a lot of people don't want to accept this fact but there is a difference between the normal sound of a mechanical hard drive and the sound of a loose fan/bolt (rattling noise) that some of us hear. I for one have had 3 iMacs, 2 of which had no abnormal hdd noise and 1 which did. All three were the 1TB Segate. Go figure.

Boy, that's for sure! This stomach gurgling thing every few seconds is getting to me. My 2007 24" iMac did not sound like this and neither of my external drives sound like this. I can't remember how long it's been since I had a machine this noisy. I think I will wait tho until sometime in the new year to have them check it out, as the Apple Store is going to be a madhouse for the next 3+ weeks.

Hope its worth it

I just cancelled my 1TB 27-inch C2D iMac on the Apple Store,
since people seem to have a problem with the seagate-drives.

Just ordered a new one with the 2TB drive. Hope the 2k Norwegian crowns
(about 350 USD) was worth it! I totally agree with you that such a expensive piece of machinery should be quiet. Or at least somewhere near.

Hi Marcus,

Keep a close eye on this thread, as a few of us have done the same thing, and we can provide updates to everyone once we get the new 2tb iMacs.. I ordered mine specifically on Saturday, and it is showing shipping in 7-10 business days, so I may not have an update in a while, but there are others slated to get their iMacs sooner. There should be enough updates on this thread from those of us doing the same thing to give you some advice on whether you should continue with your current order..

So is it safe to assume that no one on here with a 2TB has a problem with noise or have I missed a post?

After doing some research into Seagate company i found a few cases in technical support on their hard-drives;

"
While modern drives are extremely quiet, every disc drive makes a certain amount of noise while running. Normally, the faster the drive motor spins, the higher pitched the resulting sound will be.

It is also normal for the drive to make sort of a "chattering" or "clicking" sound while it is reading and writing data."

and another case;

" Normal sounds include:
1. Whining noise during drive spin-up.
2. Regular clicking or tapping sounds during drive access.
3. Hard clicks* when the drive heads park during power saving modes like Standby or Hibernation. "

maybe they are normal after all! :)

Correct except #2 shouldn't be constant and at completely random intervals. But it is for some of us.

You can definitely get warranty work/exchanges done at the Apple Store (but Retail Stores don't have the i7 in stock, AFAIK).

What the Genius Bar will NOT do for you is take your iMac and put a 2TB aftermarket drive in it for you. If you want Apple to do these upgrades, you have to order them at purchase. Otherwise, go to an Apple Authorized Reseller and get them to upgrade the drive for you so your warranty stays in tact. Also you'll be paying a bench rate of ~$100/30mins (at least that's the going rate in my area).

Tomorrow is the last day of my "return period", but I am satisfied with my i5/Seagate combination and will be keeping it.
The first one I had was horrendous with its groaning noises. The replacement had no such sounds for a few days and then I panicked a bit when I heard a similar sound when the i5 is coming out of sleep.
Nevertheless, this is a trifle compared to the first unit and there is no excuse for me to return the present i5 I have here. After several days more use, I'm happy with the general quiet operation and a little groan on waking is not a problem – I doubt I would even be aware of it if the first unit's dire noise had not made me sensitive to anything remotely similar. I hear nothing distracting when the computer is in use.
The screen and everything else is fault-free so, all-in-all, I'm pleased with what I've got. I can't imagine that anyone using this i5 would consider it faulty after using it for a day or two.
