hey guys, I have the 1TB HDD on my iMac.
It's not loud at all. In fact, I don't even hear it most of the time.
But I'm starting to get the beachball way too often.
Like few times, everyday. Some Apps even crash, including Safari.

So, can this be the HDD problem, or is it just OS X?

It could be OS X, a faulty RAM issue, an HDD Problem (be it incorrect permissions, slight data corruption or a faulty disk), or some third party apps/kexts causing your issues.

I would recommend doing the following:-

    1. Restart your mac in single user mode (hold down Command and S). This will give you a UNIX shell prompt.
    2. Type in fsck -f and press enter.. Your mac will check the disk and make repairs if necessary. It will then tell you when it is done.
    3. Type in exit and press enter, your Mac will restart back into the GUI.
    4. Start Disk Utility and select repair permissions.

Hopefully that will fix any problems. If that doesn't work, then it may be worth a genius bar appointment.
