I have A 2017 27” fusion drive iMac. I was looking forward to upgrading but love the big screen and not sure if I should get the 24” one or not. I could get a 2020 27” but I don‘t really think it’s a good idea to buy anymore Intel macs this late. What are you 27” iMac owners who were looking forward to upgrading doing now?

I will by all means wait for a device i am planning to hold onto for years, as I personally cannot justify paying £1900 on a “candy” M1 Mac i.e 16GB/512. Hopefully the bigger model will be sturdier and more future proof

Although if the chins & bezels were the same deep colour as the rear of the M1 iMacs , I’d be hard pressed not to snag the navy blue one😁

The question:
"27” IMac owners looking to upgrade: What will you do now that the 27” didn’t get an upgrade?"

The answer:
Wait two or three months until Apple releases the larger iMac.

That was easy, wasn't it...?
I thought it wasn’t confirmed we were getting a bigger one this year?

I'm in a similar boat -- 27in 5K iMac from 2017 -- 64GB, Quad Code i7. I'm at the 3 year point in its life were all my iMacs have started to act a little funky. I think they receive a signal from the MotherShip that new models are out :)

I'm bought an M1 MacBook Air (for traveling -- remember that :) -- hope to do again) and it seems to be a speedy little thing but I'm not sure the new iMac will be enough. Hoping a bigger brother comes out sooner rather than later...

I’m getting a 24” anyway. I have been working with the wallpaper shared elsewhere on this forum and think the size will be fine.

I could wait for a larger one, but as I want 2tb ssd I think the cost of the larger iMac with that will be more than I can justify anyway, so all I would be doing is delaying the purchase of the smaller one.

Moving to the 24” iMac, then possibly selling or trading in for the larger one later, depending on my needs at the time.

My 27" is a 2011 model, and I've been using it heavily for the past year, like many working from home.
I'm still on the fence for a Friday order. I know the 24" would be fine in the short term, but my concern is about future proofing.

Currently We have a 2017 27, 16GB, 512.

I am thinking of ordering the 24 some time soon. We do word processing. email. banking, Apple numbers, logging into work computer, Apple Music. Not a heavy lift regarding work flow.

The rumored 30 plus inch would be too large four our desk. Would the 24 inch suit my needs?

I'm going to post a question on the forums asking, '27” IMac owners looking to upgrade: What will you do now that the 27” didn’t get an upgrade?' so I can feel better about my decision to wait. Oh snap! Beat me to it.

From what you say, I would have thought that 24” will be absolutely fine for you.

I'm on a 2017 27" iMac 5k with upgraded RAM and a repaired fusion drive (which "split" trying to install Catalina) and the machine still feels new to me! :) So even if a 27 - 30 inch version does appear, I'll be sticking with this one. It also looks nicer than the new ones (in my opinion).
Plus my wife won't let me have one for at least another year or two! 🤣

Based on current rumors I'm not sure an larger iMac Pro will be available until at least the fall of 2021. I doubt that Apple will be using the M1 SOC in a pro level machine and based on supply chain rumors M2 SOCs aren't in production yet, but supposedly will be soon. It will take time for them to amass enough M2 SOCs to ramp up productions lines for the iMac Pro. I'm thinking either an October or November release (after the dust from the iPhone 13 launch settles).

I also think the larger iMac Pro with M2 will have a starting price start of over $2,000 and realistically cost over $3,000 for decently equipped pro level machine (at least 32GB and 1TB SSD).

I agree completely.

Your final point is the main reason I am going with the 24”. I don’t mind waiting, but just couldn’t justify the additional cost for a bigger screen and a machine far more powerful than I need, however much I like the idea.

Feel like the obvious answer is to wait till the end of the year. Confident you will see a 30" iMac before the end of the year.

Curious why you are upgrading? You have a relatively new machine.
