Hi everyone,

I'd like to ask about 2 issues that are so slight that they may not be issues at all but I'd like some affirmation. (I have a 27" Core 2 Duo iMac)

1) When in Sleep, the iMac produces a very slight buzzing sound that's audible if you place your ear near the horizontal slit that runs across the top of the monitor in the back. Could anyone check to see if theirs is like that too? (I don't know if this sound occurs during operation since other sounds are also present.)

2) Again, occurring from that horizontal slit at the back of the iMac, there's a slight smell, that I'm only able to describe as the smell of warm electronics. Is that also present in anyone else's iMac. I've been using latops for almost 10 years, so I don't recall what is normal for desktops. (The iMac is warm to the touch, but I'm certain that much is very normal.)

Thank you!

mine does not buzz when in sleep mode.... but when I wake it up, and it is under about 85-90 degrees it makes a slight grunting sound
but you actually have to be listening to hear it...

and yes it does have a smell to it...
but for me it is my keyboard, not the computer

Thanks for your reply.

I called Apple Support today. My first time calling, as this is my first Apple ever and was impressed how quickly I was speaking to someone. I was told the smell and the slight buzzing is perfectly normal.

Phew.

I went to the Apple Store to get a replacement for my yellow tinted iMac (47th week) today. The replacement (42nd week) still has a yellow tint, however, I checked to see if it has the same smell that the prior one did. And it does not.

So it seems safe to say there shouldn't be any odor coming from the horizontal slit in the back of the iMac. The first defective iMac had, I believe, a Seagate HD and this 2nd defective iMac has a Hitachi. That may or may not be relevant.
