When I choose "mirror" with my 1080p Samsung, the iMac resolution obviously gets messy, and reverts to a messy 1920x1080, to compliment the tv resolution.

Is it possible to keep the 2560x1440 resolution on the iMac, and mirror it to the 1080 TV, though "crammed in"? A special program pherhaps? I just want to be able to control my iMac from the couch, so I don't need pixel perfect resolution on the TV, just to be able to get fullscreen at both screens.

Not mirror but extend. You can extend your display to the Samsung at it's native res while retaining the iMac's native res. Just turn off mirroring with both displays connected and then select the desired resolution separately on each display in preferences (provided the Mac doesn't automatically handle that for you).

Cheers,
