Late 2014 27-inch iMac Retina with 512GB SSD crashes multiple times per day. Every day. Have been on phone with Apple Care. The best they can say is... take it in. I can do that, but fear the problem might not present. Plus the closest store is 70 miles one way.

The computer will crash under any activity, even when sleeping. Have re-installed latest OSX. Also, have noticed that I now get frequent crashes of browsers and other apps.

All of this has occurred since Day 1.

I have installed 16gb of Crucial Ram (first day). Have removed the added RAM and still get the crashes.

Any ideas from you smart folks?

Are you running Yosemite?

The reason I ask is that I had the same issue, though not as frequent as you do. The most I could get was about 3-4 days before random reboots.

I installed El Capitan, and I've maybe had one reboot in over a month. And I believe that was on the Windows side.

I submitted bug reports to Apple over the issue when I was using Yosemite, but it felt like screaming into the wind. However, I find with El Capitan, my mac is stable

SSD might be corrupted? Unlikely, but worth a check as it only takes a few minutes. Check SMART data, anything other than passed is bad. SMART Utility can be downloaded here.

If that comes out clean, try a volume verification through Disk Utility.

If no issues detected there, try restart with 'reopen windows when logging back in' disabled.

If you're having the same issues, try resetting NVRAM/SMC. If that doesn't do anything, then repair disk permissions and restart.

Also, are there any crash logs you can upload? Could be graphics card/Logic Board.

Please quote this as I'll be interested if any issues are detected.

Google Chrome Helper?! Hmm ... I don't really know much about reading these crash logs (cause it's probably just referring to the application that crashed, rather than what caused it), but could you try the following for me:

1) Completely uninstall Google Chrome using AppCleaner
2) Use Safari

Does the issue persist?

Chrome is properly un-installed. Now using Safari. Standing by to see what happens...

Thanks.

Thanks for taking the time to do that. It's unlikely that Chrome would be causing so many problems, though it's worth a try. Don't be afraid to throw loads of stuff at your Mac, please run a wealth applications at the same time. Pop it under stress as best you can, this'll hopefuly help quickly identify if the problem's resolved.

I had a similar problem (random crashes maybe twice a week on my imac). I installed Yosemite on USB stick and ran with that for over 20 days without a crash. This indicated to me that the 1TB HD was probably crap (less than 6 months old). I took it into the local Apple service shop and they were unable to see the fault, but replaced the drive and cable under warranty on the bases of my documentation of all the crashes. It's been fine since.

Maybe a SSD issue with you?

It seems like the hard drive is failing.
You could download Drivedx to check the SMART status.

Thanks for all the input.

Since un-installing Chrome, using only Safari, restarting and checking "disable" to re-open windows...it hasn't crashed again. But that's only been about three hours. Fingers crossed it holds!

It could be the hard drive but it also could be the ram as well. Remove the aftermarket ram and re-test your machine - there was Crucial ram that was renowned for causing these machines to crash. Check Amazon for the reviews on the crucial ram - I didn't buy that kind but rather bought the more expensive OWC ram and I've been up for 17 days since install without problems.

I am running Yosemite 10.10.4

I tried your first two items. Both passed.

The third item: restart.... I don't know how to disable, as you said. Pls advise. (Edit: Never mind...I figured this part out. :)

Here is the crash log, form two minutes ago. (third time today, already...plus browser and another app has crashed a few times this morning)

Uninstall the Soundflower driver, reboot and see if the crashes stop.
