So many problems...addressed so slowly.

I'll wait till second gen 27" and will pick one up then...

Hello.

I have the same problem.
After the SMC update, my fans are at maximum speed and my SMC version says 0.000
Take a look at yours, please.

Any ideas how to solve this. SMC or PRAM reset does not solve the issue.

Thanks.
m.

Have you tries reinstalling the update, sometimes that can fix issues

Software update can not find anything new.
I tried to update it manually but I get this message (pic).
I am sure that i have downloaded the right file from the site http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
(ver. 1.54f36).

I have noticed that ver.1.54f36 and ver.1.53f31 have the same link to the same download site. Is it mistake or is this normal?

Thanks.
m.

The same error msg appears if I try to manually update the latest EFI.

Hi,

After the SMC update, my fans are running at maximum speed from startup to shutdown. I tried to restart the SMC but without success.

How have you solve the issue ?

Thank you for your help.

Mitch
Hey

Mine resolved it self. So did not do anything to solve it.

Good for you :)
Mine is running at least 4 hours and many resets later still nothing is changed - fans still at maximum speed.

Would you take a peek at your SMC version no.?
Thanks.

Hello.

WOW! Yes... I was sitting at the iMac and the first thing i did when the BEEP sound was there, i went on the internet... Thought something was messed up...

The update with the screen (extern screen) made the fans in the machine go on FULL speed. I have never thought the iMac could noise that much, hehe.

I cant see any difference on the screen.

From Kehaan.

Freaky freaky update. First one to do that.

Probably i'm only the one to see somekind of difference on the screen lolol

Am i the only one that the iMac didn't shoot the fans sky high?? i dind't hear a thing.

Oh, man... weird update... my iMac is by the window and just when it rebooted it caused a kid riding his bike outside to crash into a pole. An old guy tried to help him and threw his back out, now he can't work so he's defaulted the house next door and it's falling apart so my house is going down in value. Damn you Steve Jobs! :p

:D

First, welcome to MacRumors.

To answer your question, Software Update actually installs a program into /Applications/Utilities called something along the lines of "iMac EFI Updater." Something like that. Double click it and it'll tell you how to install the updated firmware. Software Update does NOT upgrade the firmware itself. I know it's confusing, but what can you do?

Thank you for the answer :)

Well, actually I have 2x iMacs i5 and one did the firmware upgrade without glitch. The other did not.
Even if I try the direct link to apple.com and install it manually.

I am starting to wonder if it has something to do with HDD problems, when I try to load up Boot Camp assistans I get this message: (see snapshot)

I have a request for the editors at MacRumors: can you simply write "is" instead of "weighs in at" when referring to file size?
Thanks.
+1 A small download like this should not be addressed like that.

LOL

This thread is getting wierder by the minute. So far we have a cat fried my usb's from hell, a kid smacked into a three and a man injured by rescueing the kid.

Indeed this is a HELL of an Update, it affects eveything around, and a fun thread to read at work :D :D

Somewhere along the line, people have lost perspective. A tiny percentage of iMacs suffered from display issues, it was not a generic, nor a common problem. I don't know a single real world user who experienced any issues, and I know a LOT of people with a LOT of 27" iMacs - not one of the nine in the studio, delivered on release date have experienced a single issue.

It's true, it got made into a bigger deal than it was... a fairly small percentage of machines had the problem. However, it's likely the defective machines came in batches. I went through 4 machines at my local Apple Store (all with defective displays), and ended up having to wait a few weeks for a new shipment of i7 machines. This kind of experience makes it feel like it's rare to find a working machine, instead of the other way around.

The firmware beep startled me, but I remembered that that's what firmware updates do.

I had never heard my fans at full blast until the second update. I put my hands above the iMac just to feel how much air was coming out (a lot) and I marveled at how Apple can make a computer so beautiful and powerful and yet so quiet most of the time.

I had no issues before and I have no apparent issues afterwards.

Hi,

I can confirm that I have the same issue because the SMC version number is also 0.000. I also tried to reinstall manually but I have the message that this update is not for my computer.

Please tell me if you find a way to solve.

I wonder if this firmware update lets you input 1080p video into the iMac.

We are currently limited to 720p because 2560x1440 is exactly a double image of 1280x720....

Just tried that with a PS3 : nope, it ain't reading 1080p. Too bad.

And Apple continues to be on top of the game with the best desktops on Earth; congrats, SJ! :)

By the way, this iPad keyboard is awesome! First msg ever on MR..! :)

Glad to hear you like the ipad keyboard - i am still waiting to see if i would find the keyboard useful or not - iwork on the ipad is magnificent.

Now if they could just stop my mouse pointer from skipping randomly around the screen I'd be happy.

+1, although since it happens so infrequently (for me anyway) i feel it's rather forgivable.

I hope by the time Apple releases the rumored 27" LED display they've either changed suppliers or figured out what's really wrong.

all macs with built-in displays currently sold by apple have LED displays.

so you're current 27" iMac screen is without defect?

For me the mouse skipping started recently (it had been fine for months prior) and it does it a couple of times a minute. It's driving me crazy.

anyone knows if the update fixed the problem of inputing video source from a 5870 via displayport?

I'm wondering the same thing - I'm interested in connecting my 5750 (passive) equipped PC, and retiring the dedicated PC screen. Would save me tons of desktop real estate. The problem with the 5XX0 series cards was a bummer. Anyone who can shed light on whether the situation has changed?

Yes, it's solved ;)

I can use my 27" iMac as a screen for my Mac Pro :D

Cheers

Thats slightly reassuring. I also am looking to find out more information about this.

I have a PC right now with an ATi 5850. I want to get a 27" imac, 60% to use it as a display for my pc, 40% because I would like a mac desktop.

The display is so unbelievable, I was also thinking about getting the mac mini with apple cinema display, but it ends up being more money than a 27.

thru apple care, i'm in the process of exchanging my 2008 24" iMac for a current 27" iMac as 3 screen replacements (that's 4 screens) unsuccessfully solved the problems. while color casts were present on all those screens, they and other mura effects are often considered within specification and not enough to warrant a screen replacement. the problems i've experiences were much more obvious. i'm hoping my days of screen issues are behind me.

Can you talk more about your 'mura effects' on your screen? What exactly do you mean by that?
