I'm currently not able to either shutdown my iMac or restart it. When attempting to restart it, the top menu bar disappears but the system just sits there. When I try starting Finder I get an error message but I can start Safari. One I start Safari, I have control over the system once again.

Has anyone else experienced this? Short of holding in the power button, is there a way to force the system to restart?

No, it's not one of the recently announced iMac's but it's only 5 weeks old.

Strangely, after multiple attempts, it finally restarted for me. I selected "shutdown" and nothing happened. I then selected "restart" again and the system finally rebooted.

Seems odd but I can't explain it.
